Hi. I found ARM64 Linux fails to boot since commit 555f45d8f916 ("image: Convert the IH_... values to enums"). It claims the ramdisk with uImage header is corrupt or invalid as follow. ## Loading init Ramdisk from Legacy Image at 84a00000 ... The cause of the problem is commit 555f45d8f916 changed IH_ARCH_... values. The enum conversion changed the value of IH_ARCH_ARM64 from 22 to 21. This broke the compatibility with already existing uImage files. I think the enum conversion was a bad idea because we tend to assume the order of items in enum is arbitrary, like sorting items alphabetically is allowed. I maintain a U-Boot port for some custom ASICs (Intel Axxia network processors). I've been basing this on v2015.10 for some time. I just rebased to the latest (v2016.07-67-gb8e5997), and though I can get to the U-Boot prompt, Linux no longer boots. As U-Boot seems to require a device tree now, I copied the one I use for Linux (port of Linux 4.1 for the same chips). I use a .fit image containing Linux and a device tree. [U-Boot] [PATCH v2] image: fix IH_ARCH_... values for uImage compatibility

Commit 555f45d8f916 ("image: Convert the IH_... values to enums") accidentally changed some IH_ARCH_... values. Prior to that commit, there existed a gap between IH_ARCH_M68K and IH_ARCH_MICROBLAZE, like follows. #define IH_ARCH_SPARC64 11 /* Sparc 64 Bit */ #define IH_ARCH_M68K 12 /* M68K */ #define IH_ARCH_MICROBLAZE 14 /* MicroBlaze */ #define IH_ARCH_NIOS2 15 /* Nios-II */ The enum conversion broke the compatibility with existing uImage files. Reverting 555f45d8f916 will cause build error unfortunately, so here is a more easy fix. I dug the git history and figured out the gap was introduced by commit 1117cbf2adac ("nios: remove nios-32 arch"). So, I revived IH_ARCH_NIOS just for filling the gap. I added comments to each enum block. Once we assign a value to IH_... it is not allowed to change it. kind of a style question but what is the preferred way to define a board in the sense of what belongs in the defconfig file and what belongs in the header file? example: i'm now messing with a MPC8315ERDB, and here's configs/MPC8315ERDB_defconfig in its entirety: CONFIG_PPC=y CONFIG_MPC83xx=y CONFIG_TARGET_MPC8315ERDB=y CONFIG_OF_BOARD_SETUP=y CONFIG_OF_STDOUT_VIA_ALIAS=y CONFIG_BOOTDELAY=6 CONFIG_HUSH_PARSER=y CONFIG_CMD_I2C=y CONFIG_CMD_USB=y # CONFIG_CMD_SETEXPR is not set CONFIG_CMD_MII=y CONFIG_CMD_PING=y CONFIG_CMD_EXT2=y CONFIG_SYS_NS16550=y CONFIG_OF_LIBFDT=y based on my current understanding, the absolute minimum i would need in this defconfig file is just the first three lines: CONFIG_PPC=y CONFIG_MPC83xx=y CONFIG_TARGET_MPC8315ERDB=y which is sufficient to get me to the corresponding header file include/configs/MPC8315ERDB.h, at which point we're good. but is there a recommended style for what belongs in the defconfig file, and what belongs in the header file? or is that all just personal preference? i do appreciate that if there is a family of closely-related target boards, the header file can further include a "common" header file to avoid duplication but, beyond that, any style rules? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P.
