[U-Boot-Users] License issues with Xilinx provided files

Dear Peter, it has been brought to my attention that there are a couple of Xilinx priovided files in the U-Boot tree which are not compatible with the GPL. These files are (at least): board/xilinx/common/xipif_v1_23_b.c board/xilinx/common/xipif_v1_23_b.h board/xilinx/xilinx_iic/xiic_l.c board/xilinx/xilinx_iic/xiic_l.h include/asm-microblaze/arch-microblaze/xuartlite_l.h The problem with these files is especially this part in the file header: XILINX IS PROVIDING THIS DESIGN, CODE, OR INFORMATION "AS IS" AS A COURTESY TO YOU, SOLELY FOR USE IN DEVELOPING PROGRAMS AND ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ SOLUTIONS FOR XILINX DEVICES. BY PROVIDING THIS DESIGN, CODE, ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ... We cannot take this lightly, as in other files, Xilinx uses a different clause: This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version. XILINX IS PROVIDING THIS DESIGN, CODE, OR INFORMATION "AS IS" AS A COURTESY TO YOU. BY PROVIDING THIS DESIGN, CODE, OR INFORMATION AS ... It is obvious, that the second file is intended to be GPLed, while the first one is not. Do you see a way to submit new versions of the aforementioned files with a GPL compatible license header? If not, I have no other option but to remove these files from the U-Boot source tree. Please note that this also means that copies of the U-Boot code which include these files like those distributed by Xilinx (for example, as http://www.xilinx.com/bvdocs/appnotes/xapp542.zip) violate the GPL, and I must ask you to stop distributing these files. [U-Boot-Users] NAND search for bad blocks on startup

The newer NAND system seems to do a bad block search on startup. This takes several seconds when the NAND is big, like 256Mbytes. How about an #ifndef around this search, like CFG_NAND_NO_BAD_BLOCK_SEARCH so it can be turned off? I can confirm the newer NAND system works with a 16 bit Micron NAND flash right out of the box once I've implemented the glue routines specific to my board. Good job! Before I knew about the newer git version and was modifying 1.1.4 I had modified u-boot to support the micron NAND, but that work is irrelevant now. Maybe u-boot is ready for a major new release 1.1.5??? -Dave

I have sent a patch directly to Wolfgang Denk which adds support for a custom Virtex2Pro FPGA (PPC405) based ant2 board. The patch has not been posted to the list due to list attachment size limits. The board uses a Xilinx SystemACE to configure the FPGA and a Compact Flash card to store FPGA configuration data. The ant2 BSP stores all nonvolatile data on the CF card since the board does not have any fixed (i.e. non-removable) nonvolatile memory. The CF card contains the FPGA configuration bitstream, the kernel image, the root filesystem image, a default environment initialization script, and the U-Boot bootloader image. A small Initial Program Loader (IPL) is incorporated into the FPGA bitstream and is placed into on-chip FPGA RAM at FPGA configuration. The IPL loads the U-Boot image into main memory and then transfers control. This two stage scheme reduces the FPGA on-chip RAM requirements from approximately 256 KiB to approximately 25 KiB. The attached patch adds command history and editing. This patch was originally posted to the list by James MacAulay <james.macaulay(a)amirix.com>. I recall a poll on whether others found this patch useful or not but I do not remember any resolution to the question and the patch was not added to U-Boot. I have found this feature extremely useful and I use this feature constantly, so I 'gitified' the patch and posted it here. Keith Outwater

The patch below adds support for storing the U-Boot environment in a Compact FLASH card attached to a Xilinx SystemACE controller. The ability to store the environment in a CF card is useful in situations where conventional board-mounted FLASH memory is unavailable. Note that this option requires SystemACE CF write support which is presently not in U-Boot. I will submit a patch to Wolfgang Denk directly (due to list attachment size limits) which provides an implementation of board-specific (ant2 board) support for CF writes. A patch was sent to Wolfgang Denk which adds support for a Memec Design DS-BD-2VPxx-FF115 evaluation board. The patch was not posted to the list due to its size. The board configuration uses the optional SystemACE module to configure the on-board FPGA.The Compact Flash card attached to the SystemAce is also used to store all required non-volatile data including the environment, the kernel image and the root filesystem.
