I would rank it as a 8 on your scale. Unless you are a unpaid software slave (been there, done that :-), the time you spend making a "JAM file" (whatever that is) and programming the flash parts by hand (writing a custom program to drive the "JAM player") will easily pay for the BDI2000. In addition, the BDI2000 is insurance: if you ever need it just once to single step one line of code, you will have it and be able to do that. That one step of one line of code can easily save you from becoming a stark raving lunatic (been there, my wife says I'm still there ;-). The "JAM Player" has not come up on this list before, so chances are you will be even lonelier than the VisionICE people :-/. It appears to be a Windows-only solution. A quick google search and eyeballing of the WindRiver brochure gives me the impression that the sbc8260 ATM board is a respin of the sbc8260 board with the ATM PHYs on-board (looks like the same memory configuration -- that is a biggie for getting u-boot running initially). I am resending it in plain text. ====== Hi, there, I am using the u-boot with a MPC855T based board, and I am trying to boot from a compact flash by using the diskboot command. After debugging the code, I found out that the u-boot does not detect a DOS partition in the compact flash because the bytes are swapped when data is read from the IDE. In the same way, when the IDE device information is gotten, they are shown as if they are swapped two by two. As the processor is big-endian, I supposed the u-boot would automatically fix this swapping problem, though I could not understand how. The IDE interface is set in the CPU to have "16-bit" access. I don't know if I should set a "define" to fix this swapping problem, or if I should change the code (cmd_ide.c, I guess) using #ifdef <my platform>. Actually, the Compact flash data sheet specifies exactly that, for a big endian processor I should swap data when accessing a content inside it (because in the compact flash access the even address data is the least significant byte), and to not swap when reading the identification, exactly the opposite of what is done in the code (in my understanding, I could be wrong...) 1. I am designing in a MPC-5200 loosely based on the MPC-5200 LITE. 2. I plan to keep the ethernet the same. 3. I plan to keep the serial console the same. 4. I would like to use 2 : K4H511638B-TC Samsung 32Mx16 DDR memory Any comments? Am I asking for trouble? 5. I would like to use Toshiba 16Mx8 NOR flash TC58FVM6T2ATG-65. It uses common flash interface. Any comments? I am choosing this over the AMD flash in the reference design based on availability. Finally, I have a MPC-823 set up as a JAM player over JTAG for use with Altera parts.
