Hi All,
Is there are U-Boot equivalent of the kernel-newbies list, where one can ask stupid questions about u-boot?
Thanks,
Donald

U-Boot mailing list U-Boot@lists.denx.de http://lists.denx.de/mailman/listinfo/u-boot
I find myself often wondering the same. Its a shame there isnt a #include <U-boot_understanding> For the human brain....
But that would be too easy. Seconding the notion of perhaps a 'noob'-list.

It would be good to have a development *discussion* list, as opposed to the current patch-oriented list.

patches _are_ development... I don't think you can separate one from the other... As Lukasz already said, don't be afraid, post your wondering.

Hi Igor, You are correct, patches _are_ indeed development. But they are _not_ discussion. But you can discuss design decisions without reference to patches. Of course if all that you have is a hammer then the world looks like a nail, or a patch in this case. There needs to be a separate list to discuss design, planning, documentation and instruction issues, with a low-enough volume to allow for the occasional noob question. The current list is not appropriate for these needs.

Not exactly... All patches should go through a review and that can start a discussion... as it always did...
But you can discuss design decisions without reference to patches.
You still can do this on this list, as many people do. Also, in many cases, sending RFC patches is the best way to start a discussion.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Current list worked for many years and continues to work very well for all the above. IMO, splitting it will be too artificial.

Well I've got to say, as a User I'd surely like to learn some new tricks from time to time. I believe this new mailing list would be the right place for it. What is happening now: my Mailbox gets full of messages, that I barely read (because they are just too many), most of those I have read then weren't useful for me at all - and I guess I unintentionally deleted many interesting mails because of this. Surely I'm not the only one doing it this way.
Kind Regards Frank

As a newbie, I agree that it would be nice to have a low volume list for help. As it is, I tend to subscribe when I have a question and then unsubscribe later, when my question has been answered. Would it be a good idea to have separate 'users' and 'dev' lists similar to other projects (such as svn)?
Best regards
David

in this case you've the possibility to switch into "digest mode" on the mailing-list web-page. Then you get only a few emails per day and you can have a look to the headlines and read the rest if there is something interesting.
Of course, it might be a bit difficult if you want to answer on something.
Kind Regards Frank
best regards, Hannes

Another option might be to set up an active email filter that moves the U-Boot mailing list messages from your inbox to a different folder.
I have my Thunderbird installation set up this way. I don't get interrupted for U-Boot emails and I can easily scan the email subject lines to see what I might want to read, when I have time.
I've been subscribed to the list for a few years, but I consider myself a newbie in that U-Boot is not my main job. I found that after a while I had a good idea of what I should look at and what I ignore. The context of what the active developers were doing has been valuable to me. I also have asked a few pretty basic questions on the list and have found the responses to be generally helpful and (mostly) patient.

Hi Donald,
Hi All,

There are no stupid questions - there are only not appropriate answers.
I don't think that we need such a list at all. My impression is that everyone here is kind and friendly, so you are welcome to ask any questions.
This is how open source works :-).
Thanks,
Donald
