which install, reported: /usr/bin/install
I've done: ./install and it worked.
Is this a Linux thing?? Are directories specified in PATH searched first?? Hmmm.. (a bit off-topic)

If you enter a command name the shell searches through it's PATH environment variable in exactly the order the paths are written. If you don't have "." in you path it is not searched in the current directory. Most unix distros don't have . in the path, due to security reasons.
