[U-Boot-Users] how to initramfs

I´m a little confused! What´s the difference between initramfs and initrd?
How can I create a runable initramfs for my linux Kernel?
Where can I found an example for a rootfs (2.6.10)?
Is a initramfs or initrd essential for a linux prompt?
Because at the moment my serial output shows only this:
