When I read the scource of uboot 1.1.6,I find ". = .;" in the file of \board\smdk2410\u-boot.lds. I can't understand why ". = .;" is here.why not ". = ALIGN(4);"? what does ". = .;" mean?

It just assigns . to itself, which I think is a nop. That's quite an old U-Boot - you might be best to pick up the latest one.
