Someone might have an idea what could cause an IDT MIPS system to hang after few seconds of inactivity on the console?

No...it is not the watchdog and the watchdog is not enabled (o;

Interestingly when the enter key is being pressed for 2 hours repeating for example the "flinfo" command it never hangs....
