I've read that squashfs is supposed to be an improvement over cramfs but
I
Not much info in the squashfs howto other than how to make one.
Found this which explains how it is different than cramfs (basically better compression) http://www.kerneltraffic.org/kernel-traffic/kt20021111_191.html#3
Couldn't find any performance or ram usage comparisons
Also couldn't find any info about whether you could use it with u-boot. Although I suppose U-boot can use whatever filesystem your kernel can handle

It's not clear what you mean by "use it with u-boot".
Although I suppose U-boot can use whatever filesystem your kernel can handle
No. U-Boot can "use" only the file systems that are available with U-Boot and selected in your specific configuration.
What the Linux kernel later does is a completely different story.
