Dear Wolfgang:
In Linux, the same flash mounts in the blink of an eye. That is less then 500ms. This is the reason that I have started focusing back on U-Boot as there seems to be some incompatibility.
As said earlier, we are using kernel.orgs linux-2.6.17.11 kernel source. We are also using Montavista 85xx toolchain to compile both the Linux kernel and U-boot.
In formatting the flash, we use the utility flash_eraseall with a -j option, like this from bash
# flash_eraseall -j /dev/mtd0 # mount -t jffs2 /dev/mtdblock0 /mnt/flash1
