The problem is that there was no agreement about what to do, especially about the locking/unlocking stuff.

My patch fixes a couple of subtle bugs without touching (un)locking issues. It was submitted before these issues came to the list and it is not dependent on resolution of this issue but could be effected due to changes to the file.

You described the requirements of the patch that address locking/unlocking issues here so I assume Richard Woodruff will submit a
