Are we adding dead code here?  Or where exactly is this code being used?
This is a preparatory patch for keystone port that we are currently working on.
I can repost the reworked code along with patch for the port if it can't be merged
without the user code.
I cannot see any logical reason to include this patch in this series,
so please resubmit when adding code that uses this feature.
