How can I download the nightly tarballs. Do these contain the full u-boot sources?
OT how can I subscribe to the ppc-linux new group?

I'm not sure you can. Sourceforge has serious problems, and as part of these the nightly tarballs with the repository have not been created for some time. Please check out from CVS.
