Hi,
What does CONFIG_WATCHDOG do for the PPC platform?
Do I need to set it in order to be able use the watchdog API under Linux?

Yes, you need to enable CONFIG_WATCHDOG and CONFIG_WDT_MPC8XX to get access to the features documented in Documentation/man4/wdt_mpc8xx.4
