So what? If you think that parts of this documentation are wrong or obsolete please point them out in detail.

It's impossible to help you without more (and better) information for you.

What makes you think that this requires to recompile U-Boot?
Did you actually READ the available documentation, especially the DULG's sections about U-Boot's environment variables and how to employ these?
If anyone has some doc or a link to it, a few hints would be greatly appreciated.
