Aha another wierd Intel one but it was saved by the value 0 since neither PHY_1000BTSR_1000FD nor PHY_1000BTSR_1000HD was set.
Nevertheless, The patch I've just submitted makes GIGE PHY detection code conditional so no 1000Mbps detection will be attempted for 10/100 Mbps PHY (smaller code).

Read on a LXT973 Dual Phy returns (mii read) an errro on register 9 and 0x0000 on register 0x0a (lxt973 is a dual 10/100 phy)
I am afraid I cannot say that. Perhaps folks on the list try "mii read" command to test if register 0xA is returning other than 0xffff.
