Try: make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf- am335x_evm_defconfig make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabihf-
it works for me (please update your CROSS_COMPILE)

There was a change in 2014.04. After you run the *_defconfig you don't have to (Shouldn't) add am335x_evm to make. See above for correct procedure now.
