Perhaps your kernel is configured to start from uMON instead from U-Boot. Try to recompile your kernel undefining CONFIG_UMON_SHIM.
IIRC, Freescale supplied kernels had a patch to rename /dev/ttySMX0 (the default name for the i.MX serial port in the kernel) to /dev/ttyS0. I would try booting with console=/dev/ttySMX0.
