Some distro packaging separated the git mail commands into a separate package. Perhaps you need to install more than just 'git-core'? Like, 'git-[e]mail' too?
That's why I asked how he installed git - the Fedora systems I'm running also have a separate "git-email", but they also provide a "git" RPM which does not contain any files itself - it is a dummy package which brings in all subpackages.
So on Fedora, "yum install git" should do the trick.
