I believe the 4xx boards were probably not using FDT back then. You can confirm by "help bootm" -- if it only takes the kernel addy and the optional ramdisk addy, then it is non-FDT.
But whether or not u-boot is FDT capable is pretty much moot point if you are on a v2.4.x kernel, as they don't use FDT.
