Do we still need this sort of #ifdef? I thought printf() would melt away without SPL_LIBCOMMON_SUPPORT? I haven't looked though. Also it isn't related to your patch.
From what I can tell, printf implementation is orthogonal to LIBCOMMON_SUPPORT.
