git log is the adequate way to identify who contributed to our source. scripts/get_maintainer.pl is the correct way to identify maintainers.

But is there some rST doc this should be in as well? Long term and high level, the README should just tell people how to build the documentation or to read the markdown files directly, starting with the top level index.
