mmc alias support has been added in kernel 5.10 with the following commit: fa2d0aa96941 ("mmc: core: Allow setting slot index via device tree alias")
Great to know that finally made it in! I feel like the idea was shot down for years.
So I suppose this particular patch is ok but I can update the commit message to indicate that this is supported by Linux now and reference the patch. I will also make a note to submit those dt changes to Linux.
