Where did you get the information the board can only boot from NAND? Did I mistakenly present it somewhere like that please?
No, it's just suggested by the series, e.g. because imximage.cfg is NAND-specific.
This makes me wonder if the following should not be added to m53evk.h: #define CONFIG_SPL_TARGET "u-boot-with-nand-spl.imx"
