I don't have any answers on the PCMCIA issue, but one other option that may be useful is to load images from a MMC card. A MMC interface is very easy to get working (3 wires).
I don't have mmc interface in the current platform. at this moment i will try go get basic system working, FLASH, RAM, UART, when it's done i will comming back to share my work on PCMCIA.
