This has been done before with NetBSD some time ago on MPC8xx systems; see the hints in the README.
You might also want to search the freebsd-hackers archives; some Aditya Godbole seems to be working on a FreeBSD port, see the "Ramdisk support" thread on http://www.nabble.com/freebsd-hackers-f6583.html
Also, I know that Rafal Jaworowski has some patches in his queue.
