The sorting does not take much:

The hashing on the other hand might be replacable.
Reinhard that it is very common for boards to be deployed with a small env, so i wonder if the normal runtime experience is actually faster, or if the difference is about the same as system noise: boot u-boot, load env with ~20 entries, read a few env vars, boot OS.
Yes, this is one common use case.
But then, I see also systems that are running pretty complex shell scripts to implement features like reliable software updates etc., and there we see an improvment.
Also, speed is just one aspect - for me the capability of having several "profiles" is much, much more important.
