You need to send U-Boot and its device tree. Perhaps there is a mistake in my instructions but this is what I see here:
Using *-dtb.spl worked. Flashing the uboot binary to the SD at offset 2048 and loading the SPL via rkflashtool started the u-boot login screen right away.
