I had a U-Boot SPL 2013.04 (Sep 24 2014 - 00:00:28) - U-boot/MLO pair working with a device tree on the same EVM.

Please contact wherever that U-Boot is from as that's not a mainline tree. Mainline should work reasonably well on the J6 EVM.
