[U-Boot] Default initrd and fdt load behaviour on ARM (Was: Re: [linux-sunxi] Re: Not able to boot ramdisk on cubietruck)

Adding u-boot list since I think this is a general issue/question.

Actually it mentions fdt_high but not initrd_high.
But what is the reason for the default behaviour of bootz doing things
which do not conform to linux/Documentation/arm/Booting and therefore is
not going to boot?
The docs recommend that DTB and initrd go just after the 128MB boundary.
If either are loaded "too high" then the kernel will crash on boot,
often in a tricky to diagnose way (I've chased it down more than once).
It's especially annoying when one has carefully loaded everything at a
suitable address in the first place ;-)
Should the global default be changed to either 0xffffffff (no
relocation) or to start-of-ram+256MB (which should satisfy the kernels
requirements without needing logic changes to handle "just after the
128MB boundary" as a concept).
Or is it intended that each board should opt-in to a sensible default
via their default environment?
Does bootm suffer the same? I suspect it does, at least for fdt (since
initrd has a load addr in the u-boot header).
Ian.

This patch set enables support for device tree on all Exynos4 based boards.
DT support is enabled on Exynos mipi dsim and sdhci drives.
Common board_exynos4.c file is created for all functions common for
Exynos4 boards. Origen, Universal, Trats and Trats2 boards are modifed
to support device tree.

Hello all,
This is my first post here or any mailing list, so my apologies for any
mistakes.
I have added board support for the Embest Marsboard based on the imx6 dual
core chip. Embest do provide an old version of U-Boot ( 2009.08-svn8 ).
Using the current git master branch and the Wandboard and Boundry Nitrogen6x
and the original Marsboard files I have a working U-Boot. Both the eMMC and SD
card and SPI flash environment appear to be working. I seem to have problems
with networking, but have discovered the same problem with the original U-Boot
so could be my network cable.
Here are the changes from the current git master.

Gateworks Ventana is a product family based on the i.MX6. This
patch adds support for all boards in the Ventana family. Where
possible, data from the boards EEPROM is used to determine various
details about the board at runtime.
Signed-off-by: Tim Harvey <tharvey(a)gateworks.com>
---
Changed in v5:
- rebased on latest u-boot-imx
- only init pmic on baseboards that are known to use it
- add memory config for IMX6Q+512MB for gwventanaq config
Changes in v4:
- fixed FP calculation
- fixed invalid return type for read_eeprom()
- use enum and defines for GSC HWMON registers/bits
- removed unused CONFIG_SPI_FLASH_WINBOND_ERASESIZE
- use defines for I2C bus numbers
- added PCIE support
- moved board-specific gpio iomux to board_init as imx6_pcie_toggle_reset
needs it
Changes in v3:
- update README fixing typo and removing Freescale document link
- use debug() instead of printf()
- be more explicit with hwmon error output and use macro for min/max percent
- use #defines for GSC slave address and registers
- remove extern from function prototype
- moved gpio config into structure for better readability
- use enum for eeprom bit configs and array to map to fdt property alias
- add SATA regardless of cpu type
- add FIT support regardless of flash type
- display PMIC and device id in misc_init_r() instead of pmic driver
Changes in v2:
- rebase on top of u-boot-imx
- use switch..case for model specific init instead of strcmps
- move checkboard to late init allowing i2c_setup to be moved to board_init()
eeprom reading to be done after relocation, and move eeprom struct from
data segment
- move SPI/I2C init to board_init()
- update README
- remove unnecessary console overwrite function
- fix multiline comment style and eliminate >80 char lines
- eliminate unnecessary loop in board_mmc_init()
- add missing copyright to clocks.cfg
- avoid duplicating cfg files where no changes exist
- added missing SPDX header to ventana_eeprom.h
- use puts() instead of printf() for constant strings
- remove messages regarding /dev/i2c-<n>
- use get_ram_size() for determing ram_size
- cleanup gpio configuration using tables for baseboard pinmux combinations
- remove phy init errata as it doesn't pertain to use case
(it is for 802.3az which IMX6 MAC does not support)
- added pfuze100_pmic driver using PMIC API
- moved GSC code (gsc command and i2c_read/i2c_write wrappers into own file)
- allow user to quiet down some of the data displayed
- remove display support for now - will revisit later
- remove display of boot mode info - may revisit later
- replace bitwise fields in eeprom structure with bit definitions

+U-Boot for the Gateworks Ventana Product Family boards
+
+This file contains information for the port of U-Boot to the Gateworks
+Ventana Product family boards.
+
+1. Boot source, boot from NAND
+------------------------------
+
+The i.MX6 BOOT ROM expects some structures that provide details of NAND layout
+and bad block information (referred to as 'bootstreams') which are replicated
+multiple times in NAND. The number of replications is configurable through
+board strapping options and eFUSE settings. The Freescale 'kobs-ng'
+application from the Freescale LTIB BSP, which runs under Linux, must be used
+to program the bootstream in order to setup the replicated headers correctly.
+
+The Gateworks Ventana boards with NAND flash have been factory programmed
+such that their eFUSE settings expect 2 copies of the boostream (this is
+specified by providing kobs-ng with the --search_exponent=1 argument). Once in
+Linux with MTD support for the NAND on /dev/mtd0 you can program the boostream
+with:
+
+kobs-ng init -v -x --search_exponent=1 u-boot.imx
+
+The kobs-ng application uses an imximage (u-boot.imx) which contains the
+Image Vector Table (IVT) and Device Configuration Data (DCD) structures that
+the i.MX6 BOOT ROM requires to boot. The kobs-ng adds the Firmware
+Configuration Block (FCB) and Discovered Bad Block Table (DBBT).
+
+This information is taken from:
+
+More details about the i.MX6 BOOT ROM can be found in the IMX6 reference manual.
+
+2. Build
+--------
+
+There are several Gateworks Ventana boards that share a simliar design but
+vary based on CPU, Memory configuration, and subloaded devices. Although
+the subloaded devices are handled dynamically in the bootloader using
+factory configured EEPROM data to modify the device-tree, the CPU choice
+(IMX6Q vs IMX6DL) and memory configurations are currently compile-time
+options.
+
+The following Gateworks Ventana configurations exist:
+ gwventanaq1gspi: MX6Q,1GB,SPI FLASH
+ gwventanaq : MX6Q,512MB,NAND FLASH
+ gwventanaq1g : MX6Q,1GB,NAND FLASH
+ gwventanadl : MX6DL,512MB,NAND FLASH
+ gwventanadl1g : MX6DL,1GB,NAND FLASH
+
+To build U-Boot for the MX6Q,1GB,NAND FLASH for example:
+
+ make gwventanaq1g_config
+ make

Hi everyone,
I had some troubles with my U-Boot, that still aren't solved yet. I already sent the problem to the mailing list, but since haven't received any reply I guess nobody knew the answer. That's why I wonder if there is some kind of a Forum or community especially for U-Boot, unfortunately I couldn't find anything better than Stackoverflow (which couldn't help me either). Does anyone know?
Kind Regards
Frank

[U-Boot] [PATCH 1/2 v2] mpc85xx: Add support for the supplement configuration unit register
by Yuantian.Tangļ¼ freescale.com 12 Mar '14
by Yuantian.Tangļ¼ freescale.com 12 Mar '14
12 Mar '14
From: Tang Yuantian <yuantian.tang(a)freescale.com>
The supplement configuration unit (SCFG) provides chip-specific
configuration and status registers for the device. It is the chip
defined module for extending the device configuration unit (DCFG)
module. It provides a set of CCSR registers in addition to those
available in the device configuration unit.
The base address for this unit is 0x0F_C000.

[U-Boot] [RFC PATCH] kbuild: use "cc-cross-prefix" to choose CROSS_COMPILE
by Masahiro Yamada 12 Mar '14
by Masahiro Yamada 12 Mar '14
12 Mar '14
CROSS_COMPILE is generally passed from the command line
or by the environment variable because cross tools
vary from user to user.
But, having some choices of often used CROSS_COMPILE
seems reasonable.
$(call cc-cross-prefix, ...) returns the first prefix
where a prefix$(CC) is found in PATH.
If your cross tools exist in the argument of
$(call cc-cross-prefix, ...), you do not have to
specify it explicitly.

My question is which cross tools are popular enough
to be added to the list.
In my opition, arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc is popular
because it is distributed in Ubuntu.
On the other hand, I am not sure ppc_8xx-gcc is currently
being used.
Which one should be to added/deleted to our default list.
Your comments are very welcome.
(I am not familiar with compilers very much.)
