Below you'll see the verbatim output of the serial line; but the setup basically is this: The config file of the board defines a bad default value for rootpath and bootfile; these values should be retrieved from the dhcp reply. In the 1.2.0 bootloader, this is done correctly, in the 1.3.0-rc1; the bootfile is set correctly, but the rootpath fails. [U-Boot-Users] Setting entry point in u-boot standalone apps

I have a U-boot standalone app which runs on the Gumstix boards. It's based on the /u-boot-1.2.0/examples/ folder. The problem I have is that my entry function - lets call it app_entry() - isn't at the load address, it's somewhere in the middle. I'm using the output from objdump -d <elf file> > <elf file>.dis to determine where in the address range the functions are located. When I originally built the hello_world.c examples, the hello_world() function was located at the load address and everything worked fine. I would do issue the following commands to run it: loadb a0000000 <send the .bin file> go a0000000 However I discovered that as I made changes to this file the hello_world() function was moved around within the address range (ie. it was no longer at the start of the range) - this was discovered when the app no longer worked. After investigating I found that I needed to disassemble the file, locate where the entry function is now located, and do the following commands: loadb a0000000 <send the .bin file> go a0000948 (or whatever the address of my entry function was) This then worked every time. My problem is that I wish to avoid this as every time I change any of the functions located before my entry function, this address changes. It would be far nicer, and easier, to just have my entry function always located at the start of the range and I can then always execute my app by doing 'go a0000000' irrespective of any changes I make to the code.. I'm using a slightly modified version of the Makefile in the examples folder, the particular interesting part (I think) which I've not changed is: $(ELF): $(obj)%: $(obj)%.o $(LIB) $(LD) -g $(EX_LDFLAGS) -Ttext $(LOAD_ADDR) \ -o $@ -e $(notdir $(<:.o=)) $< $(LIB) \ -L$(gcclibdir) -lgcc The -e part should be specifying the entry point of the ELF file, however outputting the result of the $(notdir) part shows it's empty. When I've replaced it with just the entry function's name, it makes no difference either. As I understand it (taken from: <http://sourceware.org/binutils/docs-2.17/ld/Entry-Point.html>): "There are several ways to set the entry point. The linker will set the entry point by trying each of the following methods in order, and stopping when one of them succeeds: * the `-e' entry command-line option; * the |ENTRY(|symbol|)| command in a linker script; * the value of the symbol |start|, if defined; * the address of the first byte of the `.text' section, if present; * The address |0|." Unfortunately, the examples don't use linker scripts, and I don't want to start messing with these as it interacts with u-boot to some extent (certainly built within u-boot's makefile), and it's all working as it is. From what I understand though, the -e option should be sufficient. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and can give any advice as to how to solve it? Thanks David

[U-Boot-Users] [PATCH] OneNAND Initial Program Loader (IPL) support

Hi, This patch enables the OneNAND boot within U-Boot. Before this work, we used another OneNAND IPL called X-Loader based on open source. With this work, we can build the oneboot.bin image without other program. The build sequence is simple. First, it compiles the u-boot.bin Second, it compiles OneNAND IPL Finally, it becomes the oneboot.bin from OneNAND IPL and u-boot.bin The mechanism is similar with NAND boot except it boots from itself. Another thing is that you can only use the OneNAND IPL only to work other bootloader such as RedBoot and so on. Any comments are welcome. [U-Boot-Users] NAND and bad blocks

Hi, I'm trying to figure out what my options are for booting a system completely from NAND flash. Googling around hasn't yielded much info, but browsing "drivers/nand/" I've gathered that U-Boot handles bad blocks (factory or worn-out) & bit-flips to some degree. It's not entirely clear how things work by glancing at the code, though, so I have a few questions: 1. How does U-Boot handle a bad block in the area where the environment is stored? I can create a second environment via CFG_ENV_OFFSET_REDUND, but that's not very flexible (what if the primary and the backup are both bad blocks?) I also need to write to the environment from within Linux via the "fw_setenv" utility, but it doesn't seem to have any NAND awareness. 2. It's not obvious to me how U-Boot reacts when it encounters a bad block. If I'm copying a kernel image out of NAND, and a bad block is encountered, does it skip to the next block? If so, do I need to compensate by padding each partition with unused blocks, or how else does addressing work? Similarly for writes - if I do "nand write <memaddr> <location> 100000", and the first block is bad, will U-Boot write all 0x100000 bytes _after_ that block? 3. Can Linux handle bad blocks in the same manner? Specifically, I need to use 'nandwrite' to copy a kernel image to an MTD partition from within Linux, and have U-Boot read the image correctly on bootup, both in the presence of bad blocks and bit-flips. The only references I found were at the openmoko site, but I'm not sure how much of what they discuss is native in U-Boot & Linux, vs. being added on for openmoko. Fellow U-booters, I've run into an issue with my uboot, I want to display a bitmap image when the system boots; however, all the screen does at startup is fade from white to black and back until the OS boots up. I'm currently using an LCD screen with a resolution of 640x480 (landscape) in 8 bit mode, and I have a bitmap with the same dimentions 640*480*8 loaded into the memory at the microcontroller's recommended memory address, and I have the bitmap image converted into a header file and used as the bmp_logo.h file. Unfortunately, the modifications I've made don't seems to change the fact that the screen just fades from white to black and back, or really how fast the screen does so--the image I'm using is mostly white with some red text.
