Hello guys I'm a beginner at u-boot porting and have a question about how can a file in directory "u-boot-1.1.4\include\configs", say pxa255_idp.h, be included in the whole project? I just can not find any code line like "#include <pxa255_idp.h>". The question is easy for non-beginners but hard for me. Any advice is appreciated.

[U-Boot-Users] U-boot on rattler8248 - does not quite run for me

Hello I want to deliver a new custom computer board with Das U-boot installed. The board is based on the Freescale MPC8248 and so I am starting with the Rattler8248 eval board from Analogue Micro. I thought it would be a snap to get u-boot running on that board and then I could port it to my custom board. I want to deliver my board with u-boot because that would prove the board works and the customer has not decided whether to run linux, vxworks or no-OS and the flexibility of u-boot would support any approach. So far I have not succeeded in running u-boot on the Rattler8248. I built the u-boot flash image from the 1.1.4 source and burned it into flash with the bdi2000. It starts to print out part of the splash screen and then stops responding to the console. I check the program counter with my bdi2000 and it is running at 0x01fccxxx. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Here is what comes out on the console. [U-Boot-Users] Kernel Boot Problem - u-boot v1.0.1 - OMAP 730 P2 - v2.6.9-rc1-omap1

Hello I am trying to boot kernel version 2.6.9-rc1-omap1 on my OMAP P2 730 target board, but am facing problems in the kernel boot process. I am using u-boot version 1.0.1, which has been burnt to the target's NOR flash. u-boot 1.0.1 is up and running on the target, and I use the command 'loadb 0x(addr)' along with triggering a send file (protocol->kermit) on the hyperterminal to download the kernel image 'uImage' on to the target's RAM. 'uImage' is created using a utility 'mkimage' which is created by u-boot build process. I specified the load address & entry point as 0x10008000 while creating the uImage. I also made sure that I properly specify the environment variables for u-boot, the most important one being 'bootargs'. The following command was given at the u-boot prompt to specify 'bootargs'. OMAP730 P2 # setenv bootargs mem=32M console=ttyS0,115200n8 root=/dev/ram0 rw initrd=0x10400000,1M devfs=mount The ramdisk image was then downloaded to the target's RAM over the serial line at the 'initrd' address - 0x10400000. Having done everything by the book, I now issue the following command to boot the kernel: OMAP730 P2 # bootm 0x10008000 0x10400000 The traces received on the hyperterminal are: ## Booting image at 10008000 ... Image Name: Linux-2.6.9-rc1-omap1 Image Type: ARM Linux Kernel Image (uncompressed) Data Size: 864600 Bytes = 844.3 kB Load Address: 10008000 Entry Point: 10008000 Verifying Checksum ... OK XIP Kernel Image ... OK Starting kernel ... -----> and the execution stucks beyond this point. The system freezes right after u-boot finishes uncompressing the image for startup. Nothing is output after that & there are no responses to any input from the terminal. I am not very sure if there is any missing step which is needed to make the kernel boot or maybe I am giving the load-address/entry-point wrongly while building the kernel images. Also, I tried changing the filed textaddr-y in the kernel makefile while building the kernel zImage. Does any one have any idea that what does this address signify & does it effect the kernel images created by the build process. The original entry against the textaddr-y field in the kernel Makefile was 0xC0008000 which was changed to 0x10008000 by me as the former address looked a bit obscure & did not relate to the target's memory map. Please help me if anyone has faced the similar problem before or if anyone can make out the missing link in the steps which I am doing in order to boot the kernel image. Hello I am facing a problem with u-boot update on my OMAP P2 730 target. Are there any build-time configruation options for u-boot build related to the target's NAND or NOR flash. In other words, do we need to specify any build-time configuration options if we intend to burn the resulting u-boot binary to NAND or NOR flash. I have U-boot 1.0.1 burnt to OMAP 730 P2 NOR flash. I am now trying to update u-boot using the method: - Download u-boot.bin (new version) to target's RAM using serial line - Copy u-boot.bin to target's flash using u-boot command 'cp.b' The u-boot version I am running presently is vendor supplied (version 1.0.1) and I want to update it with the one I have built (version 1.1.1) for my target hardware. I tried downloading the u-boot.bin to the P2 730 RAM over serial line to a specific address and triggered the binary's entry point using command: go 'start address' The new u-boot binary seems to execute as it comes up with normal u-boot start-up messages, but stops and hangs at a point. Please have a look at the traces of execution: OMAP730 P2 # loadb 11080000 ## Ready for binary (kermit) download to 0x11080000 at 115200 bps... ## Total Size = 0x0001ca68 = 117352 Bytes ## Start Addr = 0x11080000 OMAP730 P2 # go 11080000 ## Starting application at 0x11080000 ... [U-Boot-Users] Conflicts in u-boot with different toolchains

Hello, I work with an OMAP5912 OSK. I am trying to build u-boot 1.1.4 for the board but hitting some problems, while building and with the built binary. I am using the ELDK toolchain that I have downloaded from www.denx.de, have installed both versions ELDK 3.1.1 (GCC-3.3.3 and GLIBC-2.3.1) and ELDK 4.0 (GCC-4.0.0 and GLIBC-2.3.5). I am able to build u-boot-1.1.4. However the binary built using ELDK 4.0 toolchain doesn't boot the board. The same sources, when 'distcleaned' and built again using the ELDK 3.1.1 toolchain generates a binary that boots the OSK board. I have made some changes in the u-boot-1.1.4 source code: For the OMAP5912 OSK the flash drivers are not available. I need to configure CFI to provide the drivers for me. As a quick work around, I picked up the OSK flash drivers from u-boot-1.1.2 and added them for supporting flash on the OSK. With the u-boot binary generated by the ELDK 3.1.1 toolchain, I can boot the board and the flash driver has also been tested. I have erased the flash, and written a JFFS2 filesystem to it. I am also able to boot out of the JFFS2 fileysystem. Has anyone seen problems building u-boot-1.1.4 with ELDK 4.0 toolchain? Further, with the ELDK 4.0 toolchain, I seem to be hitting more basic problems. for example, when I compile packages inetutils (this provides the network utilities like ftp, telnet servers and clients) it gives compilation error on some statements where there is type-casting. However, when the same inetutils sources are cleaned and built using the ELDK-3.1.1 toolchain, it builds without any issues. This seems more like a GCC-4.0.X issue as I've tested this same scenario with a crosstools toolchain (GCC-4.0.2) and have the same problems. When is mentioned "cs" i meant the DDR bank cs bounds. In cpu/mpc83xx/spd_ram.c. They are hardcoded to be 2 and 3. If it is DDR RAM rather than flash, someone other than the 834x must initialize the DDR RAM and load it with the boot program. Hello, all my friends, I am working on porting U-boot to an MPC8541 board. MPC8541 has 2 TSEC and 2 FCC, an issue is that it only has a single SMI master controller. This SMI interface is introduced and illustrated in TSEC chapter of MPC8541 reference manual, while in FCC chapter it is recommended that using GPIO to implement the SMI feature. In our design, we connect both PHY chips (88E1111s and LXT973) to this single SMI interface, we have discussed and believe that this will work. I know if we use GPIO for FCC to connect with LXT973, I can use bit-bang mii driver(define CONFIG_BITBANGMII), however, I cannot find code in U-boot to implement our current scheme. Mii driver routines in tsec.c seems only designed for TSEC device. Do I need to write a mii_phy driver for such a scheme? Thanks for your attention, Best Regards, Stephen Cheng

Hello everybody, My target is at91rm9200dk with SPI DataFlash only (no Flash). I'd like to store environment vars in this SPI DataFlash. For Flash and Nand there are corresponding modules: common/env_flash.c|env_nand.c. But for Dataflash there is nothing... Should I create the module to store environment in at91rm9200dk SPI DataFlash? Hi,all I'm new to U-boot.I am working on a MPC8247 board which has EEPROM(512KB) as the Boot chip and a flash(16MB) as the data flash.The physical address of the EEPROM is 0xfff80000-0xffffffff,and the physical address of the flash is 0xC2000000-0xC3000000.I have several questions as listed below: 1) If we could burn the u-boot.bin to the EEPROM throuth programer off the board and only read data from the EEPROM on board,should i need the driver for the EEPROM? 2) If it is correct to set the values of CFG_FLASH_BASE, CFG_MONITOR_BASE and TEXT_BASE like this: CFG_FLASH_BASE=0xC2000000 CFG_MONITOR_BASE=0xfff80000 TEXT_BASE=0xfff80000 3) I saw CFG_RAMBOOT in Start.S and CFG_LOWBOOT in MPC8260ads.h.What is the meaning of them,sorry I am blunt to software. Hi, I'm trying to run U-Boot 1.1.4 on original 440EP Bamboo board and have two major problems: 1. Ethernets don't work, just "Net: No ethernet found" on boot. In PIBS works. 2. When trying to boot uImage (loaded via USB, as eth doesn't work), it just hang after "Uncompressing Kernel Image ... OK". The same bzImage runs in PIBS. U-Boot 1.1.4, Linux 2.6.16, compiled with gcc 3.4.5. Does anybody succeed to run U-Boot on this board? thanks in advance, -- Andriy Korud

G'Day, I've been looking at a few of the posts regarding debugging tools, and the standard answer on this list appears to be "Get a BDI2000". I'm presently looking at getting a debugger to use to bring up a new board, get U-Boot going, and eventually do a lot of OS work (a new OS that we're developing - see http://www.ertos.nicta.com.au -- sorry, shameless plug). Some people that we are working with use the Lauterbach Trace32 tools extensively, and we've had some good experiences with them. I was wondering if anyone on this list had used both (particularly while developing U-Boot), and how the BDI-2000 stacks up against the Lauterbach equivalent. The u-boot 1.1.4 README gives instructions for building a linux kernel image that is bootable by u-boot's 'bootm' command. My question is, since the instructions have you convert the vmlinux (elf) to a flat binary (linux.bin), how are you supposed to get the entry point to use later during the 'mkimage' step? The entry point is contained in the elf image but that information will be lost when converted to binary. I can certainly determine the entry point manually and enter it in that way. But how about an automated way such that the steps from the README can be put straight into the kernel Makefile? Patch by Jean-Paul Saman, 11 April 2006 Booting an Linux kernel and rootfilesystem image with bootm 0x24800000 0x24600000 (for instance) aborts on some ARM systems with "Data CRC error .." on the filesystem image. The cause of this error is the ARM RealView Debugger (RVDS) not writing the last word through JTAG to the systems memory when it is not word aligned. The patch adds an option to tools/mkimage.c, called -p, which will always make sure the ramdisk image is aligned on a word boundary. The switch is optional. Hello, I tried to use the summary feature of JFFS2 on NOR-flash and ended up with U-boot failing to read the filesystem. The reason for this turned out to be that the JFFS2 scanning code in U-boot makes a write to the flash memory area. Unlinked dirents are not marked obsolete when summary is enabled and this leads U-Boot to the line "jOld->ino = 0;" in compare_dirents(). jOld points to flash memory in the case of NOR-flash. Without dcache this problem is not noticed as 0x00 seems to be a NOOP. But with dcache you get either an exception if you have ROM protection enabled or the flash chip might flip into read query mode when the cache line is written. The latter happened for me. I tried implementing get_fl_mem() with malloc() similar to the NAND code but this made things VERY slow. I'm guessing that removing the problematic line and making the code somehow sort out the highest version of the dirents is better? Regards, Anders

Hi Folks! I am starting to design a new Hardware with a pxa270 processor with sdram. The processor family developer's manual introduces two address line mappings from sdram controller to the sdram devices. One with MA<24:10> and one alternative (MDCNFG[STACK]=0b01) with MA<24:23,13:1>. The latter is required for use with pxa271 or pxa272 with internal RAM or Flash devices. On the other hand I find no issue preventing me to use this mapping also with pxa270 processor. Is this correct? Is there speaking anything against alternative mapping in performance or other disadvantages? It is not clearly dissallowed to be used with pxa270 but not explicitely allowed. This alternative mapping allows me to use more different SDRAM devices, since BA0 and BA1 are tied to MA<24:23> always. I only found lubbock.h usng this alternative mapping, but I don't know which pxa27x processor it uses. This question is intended to people which are used to pxa processors since I am a pretty greenhorn with this arch. Hi, For knowing that you must read the data sheet for this device. As far as I can remember it seems to be a bottom boot block type hence mostly the ID is 0x2249. The data sheet specifies commands that need to be given for the device to reveal it's manufacturer's id (AMD in this case) and the exact part type. Also you need to know the number of banks the hardware is organised as. No worries if you do a 32 bit cycle (there must be 2 x flash devices organised as 2 x 16 bit (seems 4 MB) on the hardware. U-BOOT already handles that. If you need more info. I will provide you with the Spansion data sheet (AMD no longer manufacture this flash). Cheers, Krishnan

At the U-boot level I don't know that their should be a huge differentiator. When you get to the OS level depending on the type of work you are doing having a bit tighter integration with the Linux kernel probably can be more help (context switch awareness and symbol context switching being something very useful). I generally use a Lauterbach when I can as I'm familiar with it and it has been stable and highly useful faster than alternatives. Also as it matures many if not all of the internal registers get mapped into the debugger. I find ETB/ETM to be very useful in debugging low level code. Being able to step bi-directionally in C or ASM at an exception point makes things much easier. LB does have an OS aware layer which I use at times. It can give you ps in various formats and access the /proc structure. More things then I'll enumerate here.
