Hi,all I'm new to U-boot.I am working on a MPC8247 board which has EEPROM(512KB) as the Boot chip and a flash(16MB) as the data flash.The physical address of the EEPROM is 0xfff80000-0xffffffff,and the physical address of the flash is 0xC2000000-0xC3000000.I have several questions as listed below: 1) If we could burn the u-boot.bin to the EEPROM throuth programer off the board and only read data from the EEPROM on board,should i need the driver for the EEPROM? 2) If it is correct to set the values of CFG_FLASH_BASE, CFG_MONITOR_BASE and TEXT_BASE like this: CFG_FLASH_BASE=0xC2000000 CFG_MONITOR_BASE=0xfff80000 TEXT_BASE=0xfff80000 3) I saw CFG_RAMBOOT in Start.S and CFG_LOWBOOT in MPC8260ads.h.What is the meaning of them,sorry I am blunt to software. Hi, I'm trying to run U-Boot 1.1.4 on original 440EP Bamboo board and have two major problems: 1. Ethernets don't work, just "Net: No ethernet found" on boot. In PIBS works. 2. When trying to boot uImage (loaded via USB, as eth doesn't work), it just hang after "Uncompressing Kernel Image ... OK". The same bzImage runs in PIBS. U-Boot 1.1.4, Linux 2.6.16, compiled with gcc 3.4.5. Does anybody succeed to run U-Boot on this board? thanks in advance, -- Andriy Korud

G'Day, I've been looking at a few of the posts regarding debugging tools, and the standard answer on this list appears to be "Get a BDI2000". I'm presently looking at getting a debugger to use to bring up a new board, get U-Boot going, and eventually do a lot of OS work (a new OS that we're developing - see http://www.ertos.nicta.com.au -- sorry, shameless plug). Some people that we are working with use the Lauterbach Trace32 tools extensively, and we've had some good experiences with them. I was wondering if anyone on this list had used both (particularly while developing U-Boot), and how the BDI-2000 stacks up against the Lauterbach equivalent. The u-boot 1.1.4 README gives instructions for building a linux kernel image that is bootable by u-boot's 'bootm' command. My question is, since the instructions have you convert the vmlinux (elf) to a flat binary (linux.bin), how are you supposed to get the entry point to use later during the 'mkimage' step? The entry point is contained in the elf image but that information will be lost when converted to binary. I can certainly determine the entry point manually and enter it in that way. But how about an automated way such that the steps from the README can be put straight into the kernel Makefile? Hi All, Our product ( MPC860 arch with Mvista Kernel) has one serial port connected to the console & is interfaced thru' SMC1.The second serial port needs to be connected to the printer thru' SMC2. Patch by Jean-Paul Saman, 11 April 2006 Booting an Linux kernel and rootfilesystem image with bootm 0x24800000 0x24600000 (for instance) aborts on some ARM systems with "Data CRC error .." on the filesystem image. The cause of this error is the ARM RealView Debugger (RVDS) not writing the last word through JTAG to the systems memory when it is not word aligned. The patch adds an option to tools/mkimage.c, called -p, which will always make sure the ramdisk image is aligned on a word boundary. The switch is optional. [U-Boot-Users] Problem with JFFS2 summary on NOR-flash

Hello, I tried to use the summary feature of JFFS2 on NOR-flash and ended up with U-boot failing to read the filesystem. The reason for this turned out to be that the JFFS2 scanning code in U-boot makes a write to the flash memory area. Unlinked dirents are not marked obsolete when summary is enabled and this leads U-Boot to the line "jOld->ino = 0;" in compare_dirents(). jOld points to flash memory in the case of NOR-flash. Without dcache this problem is not noticed as 0x00 seems to be a NOOP. But with dcache you get either an exception if you have ROM protection enabled or the flash chip might flip into read query mode when the cache line is written. The latter happened for me. I tried implementing get_fl_mem() with malloc() similar to the NAND code but this made things VERY slow. I'm guessing that removing the problematic line and making the code somehow sort out the highest version of the dirents is better? Regards, Anders

Hi Folks! I am starting to design a new Hardware with a pxa270 processor with sdram. The processor family developer's manual introduces two address line mappings from sdram controller to the sdram devices. One with MA<24:10> and one alternative (MDCNFG[STACK]=0b01) with MA<24:23,13:1>. The latter is required for use with pxa271 or pxa272 with internal RAM or Flash devices. On the other hand I find no issue preventing me to use this mapping also with pxa270 processor. Is this correct? Is there speaking anything against alternative mapping in performance or other disadvantages? It is not clearly dissallowed to be used with pxa270 but not explicitely allowed. This alternative mapping allows me to use more different SDRAM devices, since BA0 and BA1 are tied to MA<24:23> always. I only found lubbock.h usng this alternative mapping, but I don't know which pxa27x processor it uses. This question is intended to people which are used to pxa processors since I am a pretty greenhorn with this arch. Hi, For knowing that you must read the data sheet for this device. As far as I can remember it seems to be a bottom boot block type hence mostly the ID is 0x2249. The data sheet specifies commands that need to be given for the device to reveal it's manufacturer's id (AMD in this case) and the exact part type. Also you need to know the number of banks the hardware is organised as. No worries if you do a 32 bit cycle (there must be 2 x flash devices organised as 2 x 16 bit (seems 4 MB) on the hardware. U-BOOT already handles that. If you need more info. I will provide you with the Spansion data sheet (AMD no longer manufacture this flash). Cheers, Krishnan

At the U-boot level I don't know that their should be a huge differentiator. When you get to the OS level depending on the type of work you are doing having a bit tighter integration with the Linux kernel probably can be more help (context switch awareness and symbol context switching being something very useful). I generally use a Lauterbach when I can as I'm familiar with it and it has been stable and highly useful faster than alternatives. Also as it matures many if not all of the internal registers get mapped into the debugger. I find ETB/ETM to be very useful in debugging low level code. Being able to step bi-directionally in C or ASM at an exception point makes things much easier. LB does have an OS aware layer which I use at times. It can give you ps in various formats and access the /proc structure. More things then I'll enumerate here.
