Greetings u-boot'ers: I've had pretty good luck with my little rpx classic board. I've gotten pcmcia to work (albeit not flawlessly, I toasted one of my pcmcia flash cards). I've run into an interesting problem: When using a pcmcia to CF adapter, I can access the CF on an older CF card (16mb). However, with newer cards (ranging from 32mb to 512mb), the pcmcia driver gets 00's for all of the tuples. Scanning the attribute mem on the old card I can see the the tuples (starting at 0xE000_0000). New cards get 00's at the same address. Up until now, my only dealing with CF has been direct connect to a 440GX peripheral bus in 'True IDE Mode'. My best guess is that the new cards are CF+. The CF spec calls out the tuple arrangement, however, I can't find the CIS tuples. Anyone have any ideas where they may be? Or do I need to utilize some special cycles to make them show up? Per the CF 3.0 spec (CIS Read): /CE2 /CE1 /REG /OE /WE A10 A9 A8-A1 A0 CF: X 0 0 0 1 0 0 XX 0 CF+: X 0 0 0 1 X X XX 0 So, I would assume, that the same cycle could occur for CIS Read?!? Anyone using CF+ on 8xx pcmcia? Thanx for any insight! -Travis

Maybe your target is similar. Oh, sorry - it's PPC. And yes, scanning my board.c I see some debug messages regarding adresses... But as I see them, it's start adresses, hence I need to know the size of, say, u-boot it self and the stack... Or what?! BR, Martin

I want to get the OS image running on pxa255. I have several questions 1> TIll now i was just making OS image (uImage ) and loading it to RAM and then to flash. As per my understanding it is mandatory to either specify root file system as INIT RAM DISK or NFS for the OS to boot. Is it? 3> I would be able to prepare uRamdisk using mkimage, but that requires an image data file SIMPLE-ramdisk.image.gz to be specified with the -d switch. How do i make the SIMPLE-ramdisk.image.gz so that i can make uRamdisk. We were having an issue with the command "go addr" starting some binary images (like the linux kernel and others). Aubrey Li tracked this down to what appears to us as an issue in u-boot/common/cmd_boot.c:do_go which doesn't clear, or invalidate cache. Right now, we added this to our cvs, with an ifdef - if this is a common need for other architectures, we can take out the ifdef, and re-sumbit the patch. Comments, Suggestions, or Criticisms welcomed. [U-Boot-Users] Issues with U-boot port

Hi all, 1) We have a custom board based on MPC8280 processor. U-boot flash part is running properly on the board, even relocation is happening. This was confirmed by seeing the copied data from flash to RAM. But after printing the RAM size on the serial console u-boot is not proceeding. The system hangs. 2) If I try to switch on the DEBUG flag in the config.mk, my hardware is getting continuous reset. It is doing so because of getting some wrong addressing while executing init_debug module in start.S. Is point 1 and 2 related ? Also my printfs do not work. 3) Even when I do a debug using GDB I face a problem as stated in 2). In 2 and 3 what we see is that flash gets into command mode and whenever we use BDi2000 to display the flash area, we see that flash is in command mode and is displaying the status of the last command (Possible reason for a reset). We have to write 0xffffffff manually to make it come out of the command mode . We use a micron Flash compatible with Intel strata flash. MT28F128J3. Based on the fact that uncompressing an image : icache dcache time boot* off off 11 seconds off on 10 seconds on off 3 seconds on on 1 second *time to boot is based on the time to bootm to check the checksum, and uncompress the image, and print out "Starting Kernel at 0xnnnnnn". Our customers want sub 2 second boot time - so we need to have both dcache and icache on. If the restriction is that you can't use the go command with dcache on, then I can also live with that (and just put 'dcache on;' as part of the boot command for Linux kernels. -Robin

Hi; Sorry I didn't read the documentation before posting. Now I have read and here are my observations and questions: (1) Is XIP kernel only applicable with a specific patch? My Linux host is running 2.4.20 and when I `make xconfig`, I don't see any XIP option available at all. Where can I download the patches for specific kernel-version and architectures? (2) After I have read through the archives with search results for "XIP", I gather that there are only 3 architectures that currently support XIP which are SH, PPC and ARM? http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=9491873 (3) What are the general rule-of-thumb to prepare an XIP kernel/application for booting from u-boot with `bootm` if it is NOT linux? I see from `mkimage.c` source code that the first 64 bytes of the binary image to `mkimage` must be filled with 0xff. Does it mean that if it is not Linux and we can't follow the guidelines provided in http://www.denx.de/twiki/bin/view/DULG/ConfigureLinuxForXIP, we must, therefore, by hook or by crook, free up the first 64 bytes of the binary image and fill it with 0xFF in the make process so that the binary image is applicable to `mkimage`? BTW, I am using eldk-ppc-linux-x86/usr/bin/ppc_6xx-objcopy to prepare the binary image for `mkimage`. Thanks for any input. The image is loaded into flash memory at 0xff800000. My question is how, if it is possible that I can execute-in-place my application+psos kernel with bootm from u-boot? In my opinion, nand flash has at least advantages below: 1. nand flash is cheaper than nor flash. 2. nand flash is bigger than nor flash in size. We can boot from nand flash, meanwhile it serves as data rom too. Nor flash seems redundancy on the board. Of course, nor flash is popular yet. No wonder that U-Boot considers nor flash as boot rom by default. But, why SAMSUNG's S3C2410X owns builtin "boot from nand" function? It hints. "Recently, a NOR flash memory gets high in price while an SDRAM and a NAND flash memory get moderate, motivating some users to execute the boot code on a NAND flash and execute the main code on an SDRAM. S3C2410X boot code can be executed on an external NAND flash memory. In order to support NAND flash boot loader, the S3C2410X is equipped with an internal SRAM buffer called ‘Steppingstone’. When booting, the first 4 KBytes of the NAND flash memory will be loaded into Steppingstone and the boot code loaded into Steppingstone will be executed." --quoted from S3C2410X's datasheet. Yes, but It depends on the architecture and port. For OMAP24xx board you can use jtag and load directly into SDRAM and execute, or you can change the base address in config.mk and compile for SRAM and load and run from there. It is handy to use u-boot from RAM to burn a version into flash. For this to work, along with the compile addresses, the code needs to worry about modifying clocks while executing in a given memory. The ARM-242X port does this at run time, others may or may not. Hi All, I am working on walnut board which is having 4MB flash . Currently it is working fine. We are trying to place 8MB Flash to accomidate some extra software components. Now my question is , what are the necessary modifications to the existing u-boot files to make it work with 8MB flash insted of 4MB flash? Can anyone help me in this regard? Hi, I have gone through the u-boot code. My problem is i don't have the FLASH on the target board, my u-boot code everytime will be written to the target board via a external host. Whats should i take care or modify the Existing code. if My CPU is ARM9 and board type is notlisted in the standard one. My target procesoor is dm320. Thanks Harsha S

Dear all, I am new to this mailing list. I have some questions regarding the U-boot. I have gone through the u-boot code, There is no u-boot for the DSP processor DM320. where i have search for the u-boot for my DM320 board. My board configuration is as fallowed. I have a DM320 processor and my host processor is IXP420. I don't have the FLASH in My DM320 side, my U-boot should be loaded to the memry of the DM320 by IXP420 processor. As u-boot source code suggest that for loading from the FLASH. Whats the changes i should make in commonly used files for the for loading the U-boot to the DM320. And if anybody have reffernce for the DM320 u-boot developmenet please do help. the refferesnces. Thanks Harsha S

Hi, This is off topic here. But Wolfgang, will there be a mailing list dedicated to ELDK questions? I'm trying to cross compile the package "lrzsz", a GNU/autoconf'd software. No matter how I configured, it could never detect the cross-compiler ppc_4xx-gcc. So I'm wondering if ELDK supports autoconf? Well, the more general question is how to cross compile a autoconf'd software using ELDK? Thanks a lot, -Shawn.
