The attached patch makes bmp_logo.c use the header information about the start of pixel data in the bmp file instead of trying to find the start itself. If someone wants a test case bmp file that will produce incorrect output with the current code e-mail me and I can send it along. The bug was seen with the tool compiled/running under redhat 7.3 on x86 arch. The visual indication was that the bitmap was shifted to the right with a section of garbage displayed in the lower left corner. The source bmp displays fine with Win2000. I would suggest it's worth noting in the somewhere in docs that include/bmp_logo.h is overwritten by the default build environment (with the Denx logo :-( ). Hello all MIPS u-booters. I'd like to discuss how we can make the MIPS build environment a little bit easier to use. For example, the cpu/mips/config.mk assumes big endian, and although I'll be the first to stand up and say that's the only proper and useful byte ordering, there are people willing to pay me to assist with the alternative :-) I'd like it if we can just find a way to invoke 'mipseb-*' or 'mipsel-*' based upon the configuration chosen and let it go at that. I'd also like us to agree to use up to date tools. Again, the config.mk with the test and hard coded flags depending upon tools seems unnecessary since the newer tools have been around for a while and proven to work. Unless I'm doing something wrong, I also have to use binutils with the 'allow_branch_to_undefined' patch. Comments? Other concerns? Thanks. -- Dan

Hi Wolfgang et all, I ported U-Boot to OMAP5910 based board and before submiting patch I'd like to discuss few issues. Board has 64M RAM and 32M bit mirror flash, which is quite sufficient to run U-Boot under normal circumstancies. During production of prototypes I met few boards with bad printed circuit board or bad soldering. Therefore I decided to run U-Boot from OMAP's 192kB internal RAM located at 2000'0000-2002'ffff with TEXT_BASE set to 2001'2000. That way I have 64kB heap and 8kB stack, which I found is sufficient for my needs. the virtex2 fpga download code watches for init going active during a download of config data as an error condition. init also goes active after a configuration is finished in concert with the done signal. The code in cvs doesn't check for done active until all of the configuration data is sent. On our board the done signal would go active "early" as the configuration data has a few extra pad bytes at the end, but the code would print an error message even though the download had suceeded. The patch adds a check for done going active before checking init. If done is seen active the byte loading is cut short. If debugging is on it will print the count where it finished (8 bytes early for us). It also changes the printf string to indicate the counts it prints are in ticks and not mS. I only have a system with 'slave parallel' style config interface, so I've only patched that download version. The virtex2 slave serial and spartan2 versions may have the same problem, I didn't have time to look. -- Hardware, n.: The parts of a computer system that can be kicked.

The mii info command (the !CONFIG_TERSE_MII version) has a bug in current cvs. If the phy address is passed to the command the code assigns the variable addr to start, instead of the values of addrlo which is extracted from the command line. At that point in the code addr is always 0. to demonstrate find a board with a phy at a non-zero address, compare the results of 'mii info' and mii info 1' (substitute the phy address on the test board for 1). Also in this file on lines 55 and 418 there are two places where a call to mii_init() is conditionally compiled in, but one condition includes defined(CONFIG_MCF52x2) and the other doesn't. Hi, while trying to build a u-boot image for Ocotea out of the latest CVS, I noticed the following problem: ppc_4xx-ld: section .bss [fffeeb00 -> fffffec7] overlaps section .bootpg [fffff000 -> fffff21b] This one should be solved, either by reducing the command set (i.e. removing CFG_CMD_BEDBUG) or increasing the size back to 512k, as it was before the latest changes took place... Hi, The patches were developed on an ARM IntegratorCP board with ARM946ES. Since the majority code of ARM946ES cpu was copied from ARM926EJS and there was bug about CFG_HZ found in ARM946ES later, I also fixed this CFG_HZ error on ARM926EJS. The major changes are 1. Mulitple core modules support (u-boot.multicm.patch) Following OMAP boards' methodology, I added mulitple core module configuration. For example, integratorcp_946es_config is for IntegratorCP board with ARM946ES, integratorcp_config is for IntegratorCP board with ARM926EJS by default, integratorap_946es_config is for IntegratorAP board with ARM946ES, and integratorap_config is for IntegratorAP with ARM926EJS. Now only two core modules are supported, ARM946ES and ARM926EJS. 2. ARM946ES support (u-boot.arm946es.patch) 3. ARM926EJS bug fix (u-boot.arm926ejs.patch) Fixed CFG_HZ problem. Set CFG_HZ to 1000. The solution is from AT91RM9200. 4. IntegratorCP bug fixes (u-boot.integratorcp.patch) Added SDRAM size information and FLASH support. Philippe, I don't have an ARM926EJS core module. Hi, the enclosed patch agains current top of CVS eliminates two calls of the libgcc helper function _divsi3 and _modsi3. Rationale: Certain commercially available tool-chains provides b0rken libgcc.a (compiled with hardware FP) making these helper functions unusable (U-Boot already provides the unsigned counterparts in lib_arm/libarm.a). The attached patch: 1) fixes a bug with the 'fpga loadb' command The bug is in calculating the config data size - 4 bytes of length info were being read as signed chars, casted to long, shifted and added. The cast to long was doing sign extension and causing an incorrect result if a byte was greater than 0x80. For me this caused the fpga load to end early and time out waiting for the hardware completion. 2) removes compilation warnings about using __FUNCTION__ concatenated with strings 3) changes the fpga loadb to always print the file header info during a load. I realize this patch is a mishmash - hopefully it's helpful to someone. -- Hardware, n.: The parts of a computer system that can be kicked.

Hello, We are using u-boot on a Samsung S3C2410 based board and have USB mostly working using the arm920t USB driver. I say mostly working as some mass storage devices work fine, but most do not. Typically the behavior we see when they don't work is a "usb reset" reports the correct number of devices, a "usb tree" will return the correct device tree but "usb scan" will typically return a lot of CLI:TIMEOUT errors and seemingly never return. Sometimes it is able to find the storage device, but reading from it (it has a FAT16 filesystem) will return similar errors. I'm curious if these are known problems or likely to be something in the way we have (or have not) set up usb? Might anyone have some recommendations as to where to start looking? Hi there, I know that fpga load [device number] [image address] [image size] can be used to init an FPGA. Now I want to compress and wrap the FPGA data with mkimage. Is there a way to pass the address of an Image to "fpga load". Or do I have to umcompress it first using "bootm" or something and then pass the address and size to "fpga load"? Hi All U-Booters, I have written a simple u-boot environment modifying tool that you guys may find useful. (Attached). The tool is essential for our company since our devices often get to me all packaged up and the console serial port assigned to u-boot is physically inaccessible. The flash chips are pre-burned with our initial values, defining the device as host ppc1 with a fixed mac address and ip address, but we're often called upon to change those values after the fact. Therefore, my tool is designed to switch a device's hostname, mac address, and ip address in several places in the u-boot environment. For example, to change a device called ppc1 to ppc4, I can simply do something like this: ssh ppc1 envtool 4 To print your current values for hostname, ip and mac address, I do: envtool -print To print all u-boot variables, I do: envtool -printenv I'm not claiming this tool is perfect, nor even elegant. It is simple and effective, and I'm stilling making tweaks here and there. WARNING: The tool relies heavily upon the assumption that the u-boot environment variables are being stored in /dev/mtdblock1. That's how I have the kernel for my icecube-based board set up. Hi Wolfgang, Are you still considering switching from CVS to a distributed version control system? The following is a pretty interesting summary of a few of them: <http://www.livejournal.com/users/bramcohen/17319.html?thread=163751> I've dabbled with ARCH (tla) and monotone (only since the weekend) to pull the u-boot CVS into a local repository and merge/control local changes while tracking the master repository. After reading the above article, I've been reading up on DARC as well. With ARCH, my approach was to create a Sourceforge CVS -> ARCH master, using ARCH to create changesets that tracked the Sourceforge CVS master repository. I then created a "local master" ARCH repository and applied the "master master" patchsets to the "local master". I've had some problems tracking the master repository successfully. Monotone looks promising because Linus was considering using it and because, according to the article, git closely resembles it. If you're going to grab a tiger tail, might as well grab the tail of the biggest one ;-) Monotone is designed to make multiple branches and multiple heads easy to create and merge, which seems to be a good way to go for tracking a master and simultaneously controlling local changes. I don't have enough time in on it to see how well it works in practice. DARC looks very promising for slaving off a master repository with local changes. I like the idea of being able to easily forward a changeset to the Repository Master (you), and then, when it gets accepted, undo the local changeset and apply the master changeset. ARCH can be used this way but DARC appears to be structured more for this type of usage with its emphasis on independent commutable patches. How well it works in practice remains to be seen... Hi! I've got a little problem porting U-Boot to a Coldfire MCF5272 based platform. Everything's fine (now) up to the point where it relocates itself to RAM. Hi all, I'm wondering why linux and u-boot are seeing different files when I use a jjfs2 image on my nand flash. This is what I've done. I partitioned my nand flash with 3 partitions (u-boot, jffs2, user) Then I flashed the jffs2 image with nand write.jffs2 booted the uImage from my jffs2 with fsload That all worked fine (although fsload is extreamly slow) and I can use my linux. Then I created a new file in my root. A "ls" from linux displays that file. With a "ls" from u-boot the file is not visible... So what went wrong? Who is cheating on me? Thanks for your help. Jonas

Existing code is using erase_blk_tout which is too conservative for some operations but insufficient for others (like buffered writes) Fix #2: flash_full_status_check() does not combine conditions properly in the if statement. This fix was suggested by "Peter Pearse" <Peter.Pearse(a)arm.com> but a patch was never submitted as far as I can tell. Andy, U-boot 1.1.0 doesn't provide support for NAND flash with a page size of 2K-byte instead of 512 byte (and you're right, theses devices require special handling). Pantelis Antoniou submitted a patch on 2004-04-30 which seems to manage these new chips, but I don't think it has been added to the latest CVS tree. By the way, Samsung also offer 1 Giga bit devices with a 512 byte page size (K9K1G08UOM - Manufacturer ID : 0xEC, Chip ID: 0x79). Hello Wolfgang, Here is an updated patch for the OMAP242x against the CVS as of 31 May 05. This code runs against all current versions of the OMAP242x chip on the H4 reference platform. All updates are confined to 242x specific directories except for a small change to the CFI driver. The CFI driver makes some small incorrect assumptions when it comes to Intel parts which have partitioning in addition to sectoring. I sent out a now somewhat stale patch a couple months back in which I have _not_ heard any comment on. Please discard that one and apply this instead. If there any problems with this please let me know. OMAP242x H4 board update, 31 May 05 - fix for ES2(.05,.1) differences. - switch to using the cfi_flash driver. - fix SRAM build address - fix for GP device operation - unlock SRAM for GP devices. - display more device information at startup. - fix potential deadlock in omap24xx_i2c driver. - fix DLL load values to match dpllout*1 operation. - fix 2nd chip select init for combo DDR device. cfi_flash.c - add support for CFI Intel 28F256L18 on H4 board. Hi all, and sorry for disturbing you again. I'm trying to load an image from a tftp server using tftpboot. Server is reachable, and running. Address of image is correct. U-boot contacts the right IP, then tries to load the image and intead of printing "#" as documented, prints "T" (it means timeout I suppose). But I continue getting an error message: "Retry count exceeded" Then the procedure starts again. What this behaviour can depend from? I excluded tftp configuration problems and network problems. It's embarrassing to be the fool who asks all the stupid questions, but I actually can't help it... The task is the following: I have a custom board. I've 64 MB SDRAM on CS#1 and 16MB flash on CS#0. I want to port the U-Boot to boot Linux. So what I read out of the README and documentation is: 1. To setup the SDRAM is my own task. My <NAME>.c of my own custom U-Boot port implements a function initdram() that will take care of this. 2. I have to map the SDRAM to 0x0, as the U-Boot wants me to do that. 3. As the SDRAM must be at 0x0, I must map the Flash that was there before somewhere else. 4. In case I have "split" the U-Boot code into parts for I have other important information in the first sectors of my flash, I can have a CFG_MONITOR_BASE that is different from CFG_FLASH_BASE. Are these assumptions right? Unfortunately that was only the first question: How does the U-Boot know which memory banks I use and which type of memory there is? Is it possible it doesn't know? Especially I didn't understand why one would need to preliminary map some memory bank somewhere else. What reason could be there not to map the memory to it's final location in the first place? The comment in the cpu/mpc8xx/cpu_init.c (line 116 ff.) confused me even more when I was looking for answers there. Peter Asemann

[U-Boot-Users] KPIT GNUSH compiler not sufficient to compile U-Boot under Cygwin

Hello, because I am not allowed to use Linux but forced to use Windows 2000 instead I am currently trying to port U-Boot to a Renesas SH7720 (SH-3 core) based platform using Cygwin and a precompiled, freely downloadable gcc 3.4 from KPIT Cummins (http://www.kpitgnutools.com/). Although this is definitely an issue of KPIT and not of U-Boot I am posting here with the hope that someone may have an idea how to fix or work around this problem. I sent the following text to KPIT's support team: ########## Dear KPIT support team, I use GNUSHv0501 installed to C:\KPIT_Cummins\GNUSHv0501-ELF from Cygwin. I decided to not install it to its default directory to avoid known Unix trouble when there are white spaces in paths or file names. While trying to port U-Boot to SH-3 I noticed that /cygdrive/c based paths or mounted paths do not work with the GNUSH tools. c:/ like paths work. This is not problem for GCC tools that come with Cygwin. To reproduce the problem please do the following. 1.) Extract the attached test.tar.bz2 to C:\Playground\test. 2.) Open a Cygwin Bash command line. 3.) Make sure the GNUSH tools are in the path. $ which sh-elf-gcc /cygdrive/c/KPIT_Cummins/GNUSHv0403-ELF/sh-elf/bin/sh-elf-gcc 4.) mkdir /test && mount c:/Playground/test /test && cd /test/src 5.) Compile the program using Cygwin's gcc. $ gcc -I/test/inc -o hello hello.c $ ./hello Hello, world! 6.) Compile the program using GNUSH's gcc. $ sh-elf-gcc -I/test/inc -o hello hello.c hello.c:2:19: hello.h: No such file or directory Fails! 7.) Try a /cygdrive/ path instead. $ sh-elf-gcc -I/cygdrive/c/Playground/test/inc -o hello hello.c hello.c:2:19: hello.h: No such file or directory Fails! 8.) Ty a c:/ path instead. $ sh-elf-gcc -Ic:/Playground/test/inc -o hello hello.c $ sh-elf-objdump -a hello hello: file format elf32-sh hello Succeeds. This behavior is very problematic because most Cygwin tools do not return c:/ paths but mounted or /cygdrive/ paths. IMHO there is something severly wrong with GNUSH. How do I get this working with all kinds of legal paths? To make things worse continue on and try the following: 9.) Compile the program using a different include directory where one header file includes another one. $ gcc -Ic:/Playground/test/inc2 -o hello hello.c Succeeds with Cygwin's gcc. 10.) Now try GNUSH's gcc. $ sh-elf-gcc -Ic:/Playground/test/inc2 -o hello hello.c Succeeds as well (as anticipated). 11.) That means, even if only using c:/ paths would be an acceptable workaround this technique fails once there are symbolic links involved. IMHO even more proof that there is something severly wrong with GNUSH. The problem is reproducible with GNUSH v0501 as well as v0403. Sadly, I am not allowed to use Linux. Hi there! I'm having quite a few problems of understanding while trying to write an U-Boot configuration for my board. I've read in the mailing list archives and in the README... as you see, it didn't help much. The README says (I had the impression) that the following happens when the U-Boot starts: U-Boot maps memory banks using the preliminary mapping, tests RAM sizes, then banks of the same are mapped from 0x0 on, starting with CS#2. So my first question is: Am I in trouble for my SDRAM bank actually is at CS #1? This seems to be what U-Boot expects, everything in the README reads like no SDRAM should be at a bank below CS#2. You should point "dummy" at a location in RAM that is writable rather than "fixing" the code by suppressing the dummy write. Being pedantic here, dummy isn't NULL, it is a pointer to the RAM location 0x00000000 (which just happens to be the same as NULL ;-). Strictly speaking, the assignment should have been written "vu_long *dummy = 0x00000000;". The problem here is that the code assumes 0x00000000 is writable and apparently this isn't the case on your board. It obviously is a good assumption on the other boards supported by u-boot (at least the ones that use this POST code :-). The proper fix is, for your board, change the assignment "vu_long *dummy = 0x00000000;" to point to writable RAM on your board. Suppressing the write to 0x00000000 will make the memory test ineffective on all boards (bad, really bad). The purpose of the "*dummy = ~val" statement is to discharge the data bus lines. The problem this is addressing is when the previous line "*addr = val" is executed, the data bus has on it the value "val". Since there is inherent capacitance on the bus lines, that value will persist (float) on the bus for a finite time, longer than it takes for a processor to do the "readback = *addr". The result is that, if the memory doesn't respond and the bus drivers remain tristated, you will think the memory responded properly because you read the residual charge on the bus. The write of "~val" to dummy is a throw-away operation whose purpose is to put something other than "val" on the bus so that a read of the target location won't give a false positive if the memory isn't working properly. Where "dummy" points is immaterial as long as "~val" gets out on the data bus. Normally you would point it in your RAM space, but you actually could point it anywhere that causes a valid write cycle on the data bus. [U-Boot-Users] MPC5200 XLB / IP Frequencies

Hi, we are using u-boot on the MPC5200. In the file "cpu_init.c" there is a comment: "Motorola reports IPB better run at 133MHz". Does anyone know where this information can be found? I tried to find a note in the errata (Rev 5 10/2004) but found the following in support ID 412: "Use the clock ratio XLB : IP = 2 : 1" - and with XLB running at maximum 132MHz it contradicts the statement that IP runs better at 133MHz. Has anyone any ideas about how this mix together? Thanks Mats Larsson
