Hei at all I have comiled u-boot and want to download the u-boot in RAM on Memec Evaluation Board. The board has 64K RAM and address is 0x00000000 to 0x03FFFFFF. When i use the commands described in examples e.g. xmd> ppcconnect xmd> dow uboot.elf xmd> run the xmd begins to download at address 0x04000000 !!! and at the console I get information on which addresses the sectors were placed. When i use the command with explicit address giving xmd> ppcconnect xmd> dow uboot.elf 0x00000000 xmd> run the xmd begins to download but i got no information at xmd console but no error, too. In both variants I get no connection at RS232(this is next problem) but this is perhaps another problem. What kind of dow command I must use? best regards, Andreas Schmidt

Hi, The patch attached adds write buffer programming support for AMD flash chips in the drivers/cfi_flash.c file. I've tested this on a custom board with AMD S29GL256M flash chips. I tried not to change the program flow for other flash chips available before, but I have no possibility to test this. Brad, Yuli, can you check this patch if it complies with your previous work? Patching the write_buff function + /* write buffer until next buffered_size aligned boundary */ + i = buffered_size - (wp % buffered_size); + if (i>cnt) + i = cnt; is necessary because AMD chips require the write buffer to be aligned with the size of the available write buffer. It probably doesn't hurt when programming other (Intel) chips. [U-Boot-Users] U-boot Port issue on MPC8280 board

Dear all, I am trying to port U-boot 1.1.2 onto a MPC8280 based Rattler board. After a long struggle I was able to map the board properly and I am able to get till display_options (where u-boot gets a reset in printf statement). I have the following questions: 1) Are there any patches to support CPM2 (Just like the one floating around for Linux) for U-boot? (Our board requires cpm2 support) 2) Whenever we try to access the serial routines (serial_putc, printf), we get a continous reset and we are unable to proceed. Hi all, I found the cross_compiling tool path setting of ELDK can be concise further. We could just set PATH=$PATH:/opt/eldk/usr/bin RATHER THAN PATH=$PATH:/opt/eldk/usr/bin:/opt/eldk/bin At least, the shorter setting work for me well to compile 2.4 or 2.6 kernel. Is it OK for other possible cases or any other cases still need to keep the setting? Wolfgang, Thanks for your reply. Maybe my configuration was wrong at that time when I compile sources. Now it works as you described. (It was non-sense to me too.) It means "__attribute__((packed))" doesn't affect 4byte access to serial controller. "__attribute__ ((packed))" only affects the alignment of the entries in the structure. It has no influence on how to access these entries. If your access is a 32 bit read or write access then it will not be changed whether there is a "__attribute__ ((packed))" in place or not. [U-Boot-Users] Cannot boot from a uImage on the lite5200

I'm having problems getting u-boot to boot linux from a uImage on my lite5200 eval board. I can load a zImage into ram (@ 0x200000) and use the go command to boot it with no problems. When I load a uImage I get the bootup debug banners from the linux kernel and then the board resets before the "Linux version ..." banner (and then my bdi2000 halts the board). I've included the console logs for both cases below. I noticed that the uImage has the load address set to 0x00000000 instead of the 0x00800000 that the zImage uses. Is this correct? I did try a uImage with load address set to 0x00800000, but I saw no difference. BTW, ignore the "unable to mount root filesystem" kernel panic in the zImage case; I know how to fix that. Has anybody had similar problems? I'm digging deeper into it now, but any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, g. Not really. I would suspect it is in cfi_probe or something. You might wat to send an explicit reset to your flashes after they are detected (in your mtdmap file) Flash can be reset usually by writing either a 0xf0 or 0xff to them. This really should go in the MTD mailing list and not u-boot.

[U-Boot-Users] [PATCH] drivers/cfi_flash.c support for 8 BIT mode Spansion CFI Flashes

Hi, Attached is a patch which add 8 BIT mode for 8x/16x CFI Flashes from Spansion S29GLxxxM It has been tested against S29GL032M, but has no specific checkings, so must be compatible with other ones. Additionally, CFG_FLASH_USE_BUFFER_WRITE and CFG_FLASH_CFI_AMD_RESET have to be defined in board config file. As port width is checked in runtime in flash_detect_cfi, and is not based in board config, I think this should be unified. " In u-boot, I entered commands to display memory: u-boot=> md 0xff000000 The magic number 0x1985 IS here!No 0x0020 exists at all!! It's quite strange!! Why Linux detects 0x0020 instead? Why U-boot can read the data on flash correctly while linux can't? Why linux always read all data as 0x0020? When I simply replace ST M29W640DB with AMD AM29DL640D (the two chips are pin-to-pin compatible,) JFFS2 works very fine! What's the problem? AM29DL323 wasn't supported by cfi_flash driver, at least I tested it for Brad Kemp but we didn't succeed. Maybe now or other configuration can work? Hi I am trying to run Embedded linux (ELDK) on a custom powerpc board, which is similar to Artis A3000 board. This board has mpc8245(XPC8245LZY266B), natsemi 83815 ethernet, 4MB intel e28f320 flash, 16MB winbond w986432DH-6 SDRAM. So I configured and compiled U-boot for A3000 borad. U-boot worked on my board also. Next I compiled ELDK 3.0 for Sandpoint 8245 board and copied to flash. Does anyone know why the difference ? Also, board Im using has EEPROM to configure the NIC during reset. And it contains 100b (shown on first line of output), however, print out of EEPROM from natsemi.c shows d008 as written in the NS83815 manual. I'm reading the natsemi.c but I just cant see why it would read some other value. Robin, I am assuming that you are using uClinux with 'romfs' as your rootfilesystem. If this is the case, you should create your 'uImage' with 'image.bin' and not 'linux.bin'. The 'linux.bin' is just the kernel and does not include the romfs image in it.Also noticed that u have given "root=/dev/mtdblock" as kernel command. Are you placing your 'romfs' image at that address ? Another point of note is your Flash memory space, which Iis just 4MB. Dear all, I am now working on a custom board with MPC8245 and UliM5283 SATA/PATA controller. I am trying to boot an image from the hard disk but yet not get the ATA/IDE working. Now I am trying to figure out how to set those ATA_CFG_* configurations. I don't know whether this is an old question or not, actually I tried to search through both the PPCboot maillist and Uboot maillist and found no answer to similiar questions. Anybody can give me some hints? Yes, I do read through the UliM5283 datasheet, but how should I translate the information provided in the datasheet into the CFG_ATA_* settings? Has anyone been successful in getting the Realtek 8139D (or ANY 8139) working in U-boot? We have a number of boards which we want to get into our software developers' hands BUT without tftp to get their kernel images, I get to program EACH one of the boards for all developers. I think there isn't a flash driver for S29GL032M in BYTE-Mode, so you have to write your own driver. Be careful, because the AMD AM29LV320M supports a BYTE-Programm mode, to write a single byte into flash. This mode is used in many (AMD) flash drivers in U-Boot. The S29GL032M doesn't support this mode, so you have to use write buffer programming if your Flash is in X8 (BYTE) mode. Best regards Sebastian

Hi, I am currently working in a custom board based on MPC8272ADS but with some differences. One of those is Flash chip/configuration used. I am using a Spansion S29GL032M CFI Flash chip in BYTE# (8bit) mode. I have tested the drivers/cfi_flash.c, which is OK for reading, but it is not working for unlock/erase/write. Maybe due to command address definitions, which, according to Datasheet, are for 16 bit configurations. For example: 16 bit (already in driver) #define AMD_ADDR_ERASE_START 0x555 #define AMD_ADDR_START 0x555 #define AMD_ADDR_ACK 0x2AA 8 bit (should be?) #define AMD_ADDR_ERASE_START 0xAAA #define AMD_ADDR_START 0xAAA #define AMD_ADDR_ACK 0x555 So, my question is ... Is the S29GL032M (or AMD equivalent AM29LV320M) already supported in byte mode for any board in u-boot?. Hi, I still need to investigate this further, but figured that a post might encourage some suggestions about this interesting issue. hello_word was built with the default Makefile for the PPC440GX and it runs just fine. But when it is modified so that "no" stdio is used and a structure init is attempted, it crashed U-Boot (see attachment) when hello_world returns. int hello_world (int argc, char *argv[]) { struct pci_controller thehose = {0}; app_startup(argv); return (0); } The interesting part is that when one or more stdio functions is added, printf() for example, there is no crash. I was hoping that someone else might be able to reproduce this crash. My current U-Boot image has about 8 exported functions in addition to the default ones. hello_world was built against this image to insure ABI compatibility. Hi, We are having a problem with porting of Linux. We are using the Linux kernel image modified to work on an EP8248 (having the MPC8248 Processor) Board. U-boot is used as the bootloader which is working perfectly.We have our board configured the same as the EP8248 board. We have made no changes to the Kernel Image and it crashes. Are there any partitioning requirements associated with loading files using the fatload command? I have found that if I try to load a file from the 2nd partition and the 1st partition exceeds a certain size, the fatload command fails. For instance, with part1=8MB and part2=4MB, I see the following error when loading an image from the 2nd partition: => fatload ace 0:2 140000 uimage reading uimage Invalid FAT entry 26624 bytes read However, with part1=4MB and part2=4MB, the same file loads fine from the 2nd partition. If I put the file in the first partition it always loads fine. Both partitions were formatted using mkfs.msdos. >From linux, I can read and write all partitions to my hearts content which indicates that the hardware itself is ok.

Here is the full description (sorry for the previous typo): make a kernel that includes a large file in the romfs (we are using mp3 file - so it is fairly uncompressible - not sure if this is the issue or not). Does this still happen? To get the SMC91111 to work on my board I had to add the following -- perhaps 91c96 has the same issue? Have not really had time to investigate beyond the "Seems to work" stage, but here is my thinking: - Network is busy so RX buffers are full of gunk I don't care about. - TFTP starts out with a TX that it expects to send before it starts the polling loop that would throw away the input. This creates a race between the reset and the first TX. - There should be no harm in discarding packets that we cant handle in any case -- should not appear any different to the higher layer protocols than a packet that got lost due to collisions etc?? - Changing the higher layer code to flush the RX before starting up would require touching a lot more code with potential for unintended consequences on configurations I have no way to test. Also simplistic approach would just narrow the window rather than eliminate it. Also there were some questions about "Why do full reset for every operation?" I played around with this too and gave up on it. My conclusion was that without an interrupt driven service routine there were just too many ways to get wonky results when starting from an unknown state -- for my applications it is better to add a couple seconds and have reliable operation than get fast but "mostly works." Hi all, I am struggling with porting u-boot on the custom board which is based on PQ2FADS_VR(MPC8670). Though I could ping to host from the target board, I got the following error when downloading the image from host through "tftpboot", which I had make sure that freescale evaluation board could work correctly. According to the spec document, the error message "fec: rx error 0c10" means, BD_ENET_RX_NO, CRC check error in RxBD offset 0x0. I could not get what this message means correctly in this case and where I should look into it deeply. So it would be appricited if you tell me where I should look into deeply. Quick Question: Has anyone seen an issue with compressed kernels? I am using uClinux - and things work great - as long as my compressed kernel images seem to be under 2Meg. (still determining the exact size when things fail). When things get too big - the kernel decompresses - but does not boot properly. If I tftp the binary image (before gzip, and mkimage) things work OK.... I have tried "gzip -9" and "gzip" Pointers appreciated. Thanks -Robin

I'm currently working with Zachary Landau's port of the 5282, trying to get the network running correctly on a new 5282 based board with no pre-loader that boots from external flash. How could this possibly be correct? Zach's structure does appear to be the correct one, and in fact is the only one I've had any success with at all. HASH TABLES: Zach's code was clearing the individual hash table, but not the group hash table, The new code is currently clearing both tables, although I'm not technically sure this is correct as I'm really not that experienced with ethernet hash tables. SPEED: The new code can download intact linux images with tftp, but it only works if ET_DEBUG is enabled. If it's not everything seems to run too fast and the code chokes itself(sends out big bursts of packets and then doesn't respond to the big bursts it gets back). How can I tell it to slow down and wait for responses without debug statements? Is there a place for this? ICMP: Once the TFTP transaction gags, my tftpd server turns around and starts trying to ping the client to see if it's alive, but it never responds. Should it be? does the stack support this? thx, NZG.
