[U-Boot-Users] Size and format of standalone apps

Greetings I'm seeking illumination in the area of standalone applications. For example, on powerpc, the hello_world binary is 90% nulls with just a few words on the end. How can I truncate this to make the code more space efficient or change the link order to not have this vast embedded block of wasted space? It appears to be associated with libgcc so perhaps there is a way of forcing these functions to be inlined? Is there a way of avoiding them altogether or perhaps since U-Boot has already included them, maybe more vectors to gain access to them? [U-Boot-Users] U-Boot and Nand Flash

Hello All, I'm working on a new port of U-Boot to a custom board and have a few questions. Is Nand flash actually supported by U-Boot? I've been looking through the sources and could not find any references to Nand flash. I don't believe that Nand flash is supported but wanted to make sure prior to jumping in. Also, it seems like all of the code that would access flash, does it simply by reading from the address that the flash is located at. Although, this works for other flash types (ie. Intel Strataflash) this will not work for Nand flash. Would there be any objection to adding a read_flash function to the flash drivers so that the type of flash being used is generic? The nand flash driver that I write will be cpu/ppc4xx/440ep_ndfc.c as the 440ep has a Nand Flash Controller on it in addition to the board/x/flash.c that contains the flash protection and serial reading code. I want to eventually get patches to all the work to get the board and processor working back into U-Boot so please let me know if I should be doing any of the above items in a different manner. Well, more that one question, I know... ;-) I implemented cmd_get_data_size2, because cmd_get_data_size simply doesn't work and all it's users are broken too (do_pci looks good), just grep for function name and you'll see what needs fixing. My proposal is to replace cmd_get_data_size with cmd_get_data_size2 and fix all bugs in its users. How should it be done depends on answers to questions above. I've been trying to port U-Boot to an 8248-based board from Embedded Planet (http://www.embeddedplanet.com/products/ep8248.asp). I started with the MPC8260ADS configuration and made a new board, as suggested in the README. So far, the SMC1 serial port works, the DRAM controller works, flash works, I can get to the U-Boot prompt and issue commands, etc. However, when I try to use the FCC1 ethernet, problems occur. [U-Boot-Users] booting WindowsCE with u-boot

Hi all! We are currently using u-boot as bootloader for all out Linux embedded platforms but we need to support WindowsCE 4.2 too on our upcoming ARM920T-based board (at the moment it's running Linux-2.6.x only with u-boot, as some of you may know if you have read llandre posts of the past days). The evaluation board (EDB9312) is know using redboot to boot WinCE (as it does with all the other OS), but (IMHO) u-boot is more powerful, flexible, lightwight and user friendly :-) Running WinCE is preatty dumb: just load the (huge....) binary image somewhere and jmp to a specific location. No parameters to pass to the kernel (at least no one reported officially by microsoft docs or by the WinCE newsgroup): everything must be stored in the image (in the registry binary file) or customized by the OEM. Of course we want to do some more than just load a binary file run it without any possibility of customizing its startup behavior (unless do a full rebuild of the kernel :,-(. We want to let the user change some of the basic OS parameter as we do in Linux. I don't know if some of you already had some experience in WinCE or has thought about booting it using u-boot but in WinCE there are two spots to customize to change the boot behaviour: a) OEM code: which controls some low level information (memory layout, CPU/board type, debug connection configuration, and so on...) b) Registry setting: as in desktop enviroment everything is stored in the registry, from driver loading and configuration option to TCP/IP configuration, from demons startup to mount point and root file system. First question: has anybody of you already worked (or at least thought to work) with WinCE and u-boot? if yes: any idea about kernel boot parameter? Here is my idea about the WinCE boot process from the u-boot perspective: 0) well.. load and store the binary image (which includes the kernel and the (minimal) file too) as we already do, using mkimage tool to make it compliant with the u-boot binary image format (this will require to add another OS type, I think...). 1) pass some mandatory kernel argument using the ATAGs Linux like structure (ATAG_CORE and ATAG_MEM at least, maybe add some custom tag if needed) 2) let the user change some common parameters (like TCP/IP configuration) in an easy way, again using custom ATAG, ATAG_CMDLINE or by setting some registry string somewhere (see point 3) 3) let the user to load some piece of registry (that will be stored later in the system registry at startup) to customize the rest of the system in a flexible way. My idea is to store a text file with of some registry key somewhere in flash and then pass it address as kernel parameter. But, of course, before proceeding with my "custom" WinCE support I want to do know what the u-boot comunity think about my ideas.. Any suggestion or any advice? Thanks in advance! All: I am involved in a U-Boot port to a new processor, and had a few implementation questions. Question #1 ------------------------------ For serial I/O, the cpu specific function found in /cpu/<processor>serial.c named serial_getc(void); can either be implemented where - serial_getc sits a bangs on UART_rx_buff as fast as it can, until something shows up. (idle loop of wait for keystroke). OR - an independent uart_rx_int populates a ring buffer, serial_getc grabs the character from the ring buffer, if there isn't a char in the ring buffer, go to sleep for 1ms (at 115,200 Buad, 8N1; 1 char = ~87us; as long as the ring buffer can cope with 12 chars you should be OK). It seems as if most of the implementations that I looked at do the first - which is easier, but it is also why monitors, boot loaders, etc are usually worse case power consumers. (IMHO - idle loops should be idle - not wait for keystroke - but it is harder, and adds complexity - you still can get UART interrupts when you have networking activity, and you need to make sure that you can handle both - so I can understand why it is implemented as is). Question #2 --------------------------- For Networking functions - I have a SMSC LAN911C11 on the first target board, and every time I access the networking functions, it seems to re-initalize the SMSC 9191C111. Is this normal? Or do I have a bug (I would assume - bug, but didn't see anything yet). Question #3 ---------------------- In /include/configs/<board>.h what should CFG_HZ be set to? Lost of different boards seem to be set to 1000 , (but I don't think that they are all running at the same frequency) but then some are not - I could not find it int the docs (but maybe didn't look hard enough) Question #4 -------------------- In /cpu/<cpu_type>interrupts.c in the function udelay(unsigned long usec) - how exact should this be? (exactly 1.00000us or +/- 5% is OK?) Question #5 ---------------------- In /lib_<cup_type>/timer.c (for those processors that have it) - I have a processor that supports ticks in terms of instructions clocks (up to 750MHz) or peripheral clock ticks (up to 133MHz). I assume that peripheral clocks ticks are OK. (and that loosing the accuracy is not a big deal). Question #6 ------------------- Which is actually more of a feature enhancement that a question - if I implement a autobaud routine in /cpu/<cpu_type>/serial.c in the function serial_tstc - that would be the correct place for it? (If no key presses, return 0, if there is a key press - figure out the speed, set the UART up properly if it is not, and then return a 1 ?) I'm sorry if I posted where is not the exact place, but it seems linuxppc_embedded maillist doesn't work. my Linux kernel 2.4.18 panic at init EPSON1356 Display Controller I'm using Cogent CSB272(based on IBM 405GP) board, and the OS is montavisa 3.0, kernel 2.4.18, bootloader is U-BOOT 1.1.1. When the board power on, In U-BOOT shell, the first time I download kernel to SDRAM(64MB), then bootm, kernel panic at init EPSON1356 Display Controller, so I reset U-BOOT, I download kernel again and at the same address(0x200000),this time, boot linux ok. Why??? When I disabled framebuffer support in kernel, then every time booting linux is ok. I used another bootloader uMon and enabled framebuffer support in kernel,every time booting linux is ok. I have changed bd_t struct in kernel, then it is the same as in U-BOOT, undefined CFG_CLK_Mhz, I compiled U-BOOT with csb272_config. Should I pay attention to SDRAM init sequence in U-BOOT as Wolfgang has said many times? I didn't change anything about sdram_init in init.S Isn't it enough to do the sdram_init in init.S? Wolfgang, Your recommendation was well noted but at this point I want to avoid using u-boot image, compiled by myself from the source. At this point I want to use the "tried"/"tested" bootloader In my opinion, my question re usability of the u-boot bootloader images provided on the Arabella 2.0 CD-ROM "Linux for Motorola 82xx" is still worth to be asked/answered - this cdrom is "packaged" by the Freescale, when they ship the brand new board. Also FreeScale "packages" Code Warrior 8.14 (with one month evaluation license) + WireTAP probe into the shipment. Do you yourself have the PQ2FADS_VR 66 MHz board (with the MPC8275 processor) by any chance (as well as Arabella 2.0 CD-ROM "Linux for Motorola 82xx" ?) ? A couple of questions: I have several changes PXA specific and u-boot in general and a new board LN2410SBC. This is the first time I have tried submitting any patches to anywhere. Are there specific cvs diff arguments I should use? Where are other people patches? Do I have to search emails to find them? My patches address: Secure Digital Card Support for PXA (and fixes for MMC support). LED command added to turn on/off/flash board leds from command prompt. Read command added to mmc (dump sectors). LN2410SBC (S3C2410) board with: Ethernet,NAND,Flash,MMC/SD,LED support. (CompactFlash, USB Host & Slave on the way). (I hope my yahoo HTTP is turned off now). David.

Hi all.. Is there any direct support for FEC in Uboot for MPC8540..? It seems that in MPC8560 support is available.But there FEC is configured using CPM module which is absent in MPC8540. So is there any update on that or can anyone give some idea on this.. Does netconsole work from boot?? I have implemented it on my board, but if I saveenv and reset, it comes up with stdxxx=serial in the environment!?!?! netconsole works fine after implementing Travis' patch for the 440gx_enet, but evey time I reset I have to use "setenv stdxxx nc" Cheers Daren

Hello, Did any one on this list used elf bootloader for PQ2FADS_VR 66 MHz board (with the MPC8275 processor) provided on the Arabella 2.0 CD-ROM "Linux for Motorola 82xx" ? Specifically I was trying to use Code Warrior 8.14 + WireTAP to program the 66 MHz elf U-boot bootloader image (supplied on the Arabella 2.0 CD-ROM "Linux for Motorola 82xx") onto the flash of the brand new PQ2FADS_VR 66 MHz board with the MPC8275 processor. While the programming of the flash seemingly completed without errors - however the resulted bootloader is not functional ... - upon the power reset of the board the serial driver (at least) of the bootloader was not functional (either one of the board's two serial leds was not "up" and there was no connection over HyperTerminal through either one of the two board's serial connectors). G'Day everyone, Quick question as to why we are using mtune=strongarm1100 for the xscale? (and -march=armv4). I've been using -march=armv5 and -mtune=xscale successfully for the past few weeks using arm-linux-gcc version 3.3.2. These are more appropriate settings for the pxa. (This is PLATFORM_CPPFLAGS, line 28 in cpu/pxa/config.mk) (Point of the question: can I patch this?).
