[U-Boot-Users] Wrong compiler called for as flags

Hi, while trying to make u-boot gcc-3.4 compilable I just found a strange effect. The attached patch tries to fix the issues that came up on the list during the last days. As gcc-2.95.3 is not able to generate code with -march=armv5 -mtune=xscale, I tried to make the decision on compile time by finding out which compiler we have. This basically works, but for the compilation of cpu/pxa/start.S it looks like the host compiler is taken instead of the cross-gcc to determine the compiler flags. You can easily reproduce this by applying my patch and compiling with a 2.95.3 cross gcc, then grepping the output for 'armv5'. The incorrect results come from the fact that, in this case, CROSS_COMPILE is not set, so instead of arm-linux-gcc the host gcc is called to determine the test. My assumption is that the effect comes from the order the different Makefiles and config.mk files are included when being called from cpu/pxa. Unfortunately this is not easy to debug - maybe there is somebody with better Makefile debugging skills than me on the list ;) Robert -- Dipl.-Ing. Hello, I'm noticing that the examples directory fails to compile with gcc-3.4.0. The _exports.h symbols are not making it into stubs.o . I found that the compile works if you: Change: static void __attribute__((unused)) dummy(void) to: void __attribute__((unused)) dummy(void) This would seem to be a new optimization or bug. I would expect that unused should make it stick around, even if it is not used locally. The kernel uses this same construct in a few places mostly in debug code and drivers I don't' use... This patch cleans up some debug code from 'board/lpd7a40x/flash.c' flash_erase(). CHANGELOG: * Patch by Paul Ruhland, 11 Jun 2004: Remove debug code from 'board/lpd7a40x/flash.c' - debugging a problem with flash_erase timing out immediately, a printf was added to display the start and stop values of the timer to the console. Timer functions were changed to see if it was particular to any one method. Problem turned out to be in the timer implemention which was fixed prior to submitting original board support patch. Unfortunately, backing out the above changes was overlooked in that patch. Hey all, I just found that lib_arm/board.c:start_armboot()'s GCC3.4.0 generated code sequence breaks ARM u-boot's. I am using the GCC3.4.0 which CodeSourcery put out. I have found what appears to be a fix. A compiler optimization barrier needs to be inserted after gd (AKA R8) is initialized. See the below snippit. With out this barrier gd is calculated into a temporary register, and when the gd->bd is actually attempted an unitilized R8 is used causing a fatal abort. Hi, I have a Walnut board with ppc405. I have manged to install u-boot on the board. I can download linux image (I am using Monta Vista one) too. But when I tried to use "bootm", the system hanged after showing "## Transferring control to Linux (at address 00000000) ..." The following is the dump of serial console output. [U-Boot-Users] Debugging u-boot goes to 0x70c (Program exception)

Hi, I have problem in flash_init() to get correct manufacturer's ID. So I want to debug the function. Once I set a breakpoint at flash_init() and issue a continue command, gdb always shows that the program stops at 0x0000070c, which means a program exception. A program exception can be caused by an illegal instruction, a privileged instruction, or a trap. I don't know which caused this exception in my case. I'm wondering it may not be u-boot itself but the way I'm debugging that caused this exception. So I attached the whole procedure I did, not very much long. Would anybody give me some hints? [U-Boot-Users] Uncompressing Linux...

hello, although you might believe at first this is not the right place for such a post ;) it seems to my humble personne u-boot is somehow involved in my problem. (read: probably something I did wrong!) I download an elf image of the kernel through the command tftp "image.elf". The sections are relocated by the command bootelf which then passes the entry point to which the program counter jumps. Everything seems to go on fine until the zImage gets uncompressed. The ppc405 hangs at the inflate_blocks function. Now what seems weird is that using a debugger and slighlty modifying the bootelf function to return right after the load_elf_image function and then issuing the command "go 0x400000" directly from the debugger works! This means to me that the segments from the elf file are correclty loaded but that issuing the u-boot "go" command somehow alters the zImage or something... I work with MPC8560ADS and I managed to get working U-Boot from the CVS top with some changes. Maybe some of the changes are included in the patch, I didn't check. It looks like they can be relevant for 8540 too but I haven't got the hardware to verify this assumption. First of all, I changed the memory map to make it consistent with the README, i.e. #define CFG_CCSRBAR 0xE0000000 #define CFG_LBC_SDRAM_BASE 0xf0000000 #define CFG_PCI_MEM_BASE 0x80000000 #define CFG_PCI_MEM_PHYS 0x80000000 #define CFG_PCI_MEM_SIZE 0x20000000 #define CFG_PCI_IO_BASE 0xe2000000 #define CFG_RAPID_IO_BASE 0xc0000000 Then I noted that TSEC initialisation (tsec_initialize in cpu/mpc85xx/tsec.c) is defined with two parameters but called with one. I just hard-coded the missing parameter (TSEC number) to zero. I also commented out all the version check code in checkcpu function. After making these changes, I was able to compile and run the U-Boot ... until the first saveenv command. A quick look into the configuration file showed that the environment is placed in the middle of the U-Boot's code. I moved the environment to (CFG_MONITOR_BASE - 0x40000) and now it's OK. A note about building the U-Boot. I don't what tool chain you're using but if it's not Freescale-tweaked GCC 2.95 you probably will have a problem because target CPU type is missing from cpu/mpc85xx/config.mk. I added `-mcpu=8540 -mno-string' to PLATFORM_RELFLAGS. I could submit a patch cleaning up all this (and many other things) but IMHO preparing a patch against current CVS top does not make sense because Jon is working on a new version of his patch. We'll be just removing each other's code. Hi all, I am using ppc 405 custom board. I managed to have u-boot running on my board. But for some reason the hello_world couldn't run on my board. Below are the detail: 1) I used TFTP to download hello_world.srec and put it to memory starting from 0x40004. => tftpboot 0x40004 hello_world.srec ENET Speed is 100 Mbps - HALF duplex connection TFTP from server 138.31.3.162; our IP address is 138.31.3.79 Filename 'hello_world.srec'. I see a post on this list which claims that u-boot supports FADS852T board, but I cannot find it in the Makefile. The closeist match is FADS860T. Which bring me to the question, what do I need to change in u-boot in order to make it run on the board ? I have hardware up & running under bdi, settings in bdi should be applied to to u-boot ?

Hello, I am working with the MPPC8540ADS and I am having problems. I have followed the discussion about the MPPC8560ADS and have tried the top of the CVS tree. I have the following undefined.
