[U-Boot-Users] Need help booting linux on IBM 405EP eval board

Hi, guys. I'm having a hard time getting U-Boot to boot Linux on an IBM 405EP evaluation board. Here's what I've tried: First, I think my kernels are fine. I can compile 2.4.18 from an older version of the ELDK or I can compile 2.4.24 from the latest released ELDK. I'm using ELDK tools for all of my builds. Using the IBM bootloader that comes on the board and the "treeboot" image file format, I can get the IBM board to tftp my kernel over the lan and run it. So, I think the kernel is working fine. I also don't have any problem running U-Boot. I compiled 1.0.2 and installed it on the board. U-Boot runs fine and I can make it tftp a file over the network as well. Using iminfo, I can see that it read what I expect. However, no matter what I try, I can't get the kernel to actually boot. In the older kernel, I'm using a "make pImage" and in the newer kernel I do "make uImage". I've also tried running the mkimage tool manually with various options to see if I could get a kernel to boot. iminfo says the kernel is fine and I get to the "Uncompressing Linux Kernel ... OK" stage but it stops there. I've noticed that the mkimage script is being called to set a start point and relocation point both of 0. Does that work on these boards? One person posted in the mailing list that you couldn't boot a kernel at 0. I've tried changing that to 400000 and it didn't help, though. Another question I have is that I see 400000 embedded in at least one of the kernel build scripts. Is that a special number? Also, the kernel itself, by default, seems to build with a start point of 0xc0000000. On my system, that's not even RAM. But the kernels I built without changing that number boot fine with the IBM bootloader, so maybe it's not actually used in this environment. I suspect I'm just running into some little interaction, like I need to change this number here or this number doesn't match that number. If anyone can give me some pointers, I'd appreciate it. We've used PPCBOOT in the past on other architectures without any problem, so I'm surprised that this is giving me fits. Thanks Jeff -- Jeff Tucker jeff(a)jltnet.com

Hi All. We are working with the development KIT from Atmel AT91RM9200DK and have problem when the U-Boot tries to uncompress the kernel Image. We have done the following steps. We started to configure the kernel with menuconfig and after that we run make dep and that was OK, then we performed the following sequence. 1. make Image 2. /usr/local/arm/2.95.3/bin/arm-linux-objcopy -O binary -S vmlinux linux.bin 3. gzip -v9 linux.bin 4. mkimage -A arm -O linux -C gzip -a 0x21000000 -e 0x21000000 -d linux.bin.gz uImage Version of the programs. > Are you sure this is a U-Boot issue? I don't think Linux > 2.6.x is stable for PowerPC. Yes, I am sure, because I just tested it on 2.4.24 and the exact same thing happens. The PCI driver in u-boot have changed the access method to the memory mapped PCI registers from using pci_outl and #defined addresses to using a struct. I will have to check but I have a feeling tat a field i the struct is misalligned or something like that. As fro 2.6 not ready yet: I am not too worried, because our board will probably not be shipping until late this year or next year, and I am confident that it will be stabe by that time, and I have not seen any problems yet (doing heavy compiling to test and to make a new LFS filesystem)

[U-Boot-Users] Support POST on MPC824x_based board

Dear all: I make our MPC824x_based board support POST, but not support watchdog POST. I add a item "unsigned long post_word" in struct global_data in include/asm-ppc/global_data.h instead of the macro CPM_POST_WORD_ADDR such as in function post_word_load() in file cpu/mpc8260/commproc.c. Since all items in global_data struct gd_t will be initiated to "0" after reboot, the post_word can't remember whether the watchdog POST has been executed. So, watchdog POST can't be supported. I try to find a free 32 bits register in MPC824x to place the post_word, but I can't find the gold register. :( Now, my poor POST can support Memory,CPU,I2C,RTC. I also added the Cache,UART to the POST list, but I still have no chance to debug my codes of Cache and UART POST in our board (our board is being used to debug linux drivers now.). I'm not sure of my method. Any advice will be welcome, really. Regards, Birkin
