Hi. Would someone happen to know how I could boot into U-Boot on IBM Walnut (PPC 405GP) using the ROM monitor only? Just for testing before flashing. Hello. If anyone has experience in getting u-boot running (temporarily or flashing, whatever) on IBM 405GP walnut board WITHOUT using external debugger probes, please share your knowledge. Preferred way would seem to be to load u-boot into SRAM (faking to be flash) and running it from there, but without processor probe this seems difficult. Hi All I am relatively new to u-boot and need your help. I have a few doubts regarding customization of U-boot, specifically the flash initialization sequence. Board config: MPC 8266 based custom board Boot Flash: AMD Flash Am29LV400BB70-EI (4 Mb) (U-boot will reside here) Main Flash: Intel StrataFlash TE28F256J3c-125 (32 Mb) U-boot 1.1.1 I have used the board/mpc8266ads.c, cpu/mpc8266ads.c and other related files as a base. I plan to modify them and compile u-boot for my custom board. Can I use strataFlash.c in ppmc8260? What changes are necessary to make it work with mpc8266 code base? What are the other changes necessary to initialize 2 flashes? Another doubt: Flash initialization lib_ppc/board.c/board_init_r()/flash_init() is done pretty late, after u-boot has relocated to RAM. If your mailing list archive tool won't map character sets for you so that "foo" matches the representation of "foo" in some oddball character set, then your mailing list archive tool is broken. And if you want to search an un-indexed mail spool which hasn't been QP/base64/uuencode/MIME decoded using grep, then you should seriously look into the "formail" utility which comes as part of the procmail package. You can then apply MIME transforms on each message in your un-indexed file before piping to grep. Of course it'll be slower than an amputee sloth, but hey, if you want to search large archives quickly, then index them. Look, ultimately, Wolfgang gets to make the rules for his list, and I'm not suggesting otherwise, but really, when the only reason you choose to not read someone's email message asking for help is because your email app is broken, it seems a little bit rude to suggest that the problem is on the other end. I also found two boards with mixed chips (one AM29LV641MH and AM29LV641DH). One of those board has problem on erasing, no problem on programming. The other board is fine. The problem did show up on the board with two AM29LV641MH. I have revised the driver to support port width from 8-bit to 64-bit, chip width from 8-bit to 32-bit. Also, I modified the driver to poll DQ6 at the same address where the date is being written to. And I add the polling DQ7, which is not enabled by default. With these modification, all my boards passed testing. By the way, here is the feedback from AMD, "It is a good practice to use the exact address where data is being written to when using the "DQ6" method, even though in theory you don't have to." I am unable to boot U-boot after loading to flash through JflashMM program. Flash loading is verified successfully. 1. How do I debug? 2. Does u-boot support the above flash configuration? 3. Hi, The u-boot code (version 1.1.1) contains the SDRAM testing code. The Test cases involved for the SDRAM are Address Bus Test, Data Bus Test and Device Integrity Test. For SDRAM each and every thing is OK, but for EEPROM and Flash Memory No such test Cases are their using which the user can check the correctness of these Devices at the command prompt. Folks, I have encountered a problem with downloading Linux to my TQM860L board using S records via the serial port. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Last week I followed the ELDK instructions to replace the TQ Monitor on my board with Das U-Boot. I use ELDK 3.0 but download the U-Boot 1.1.1 source and compiled it rather than the 1.0.2 source delivered with ELDK 3.0. I built U-Boot using make TQM860L_config I now realise that I have FEC on my board, and should have used Make TQM860L_FEC_config but I did not expect that this would impact on the serial port comms. Perhaps this is the source of the problem ??? I used "cu" on my SuSe 8.2 PC to download U-Boot as SRECs over the serial port. All of this went well - I can log into U-Boot and execute commands such as flinfo. I then built the linux 2.4.24 kernel that comes with ELDK 3.0 and converted this to S records. There a special mechanism is used to query the flash for the protection status of each sector. As far as I know, the used mechanism is not part of the CFI Spec. And worse the mechanism is different for Intel and AMD (Spansion). For Intel flashes the sector protection status could be read when the flash is in the CFI query state (at offset 02h on each sector address). For AMD flashes this works only in the "autoselect" mode and in the actual driver the "autoselect" mode is not used. And I could not say, if autoselect and CFI Query mode would work at the same time. I wonder if anyone else encountered similar problems with AMD flahes and sector protection detection? As solution for flashes with AMD command set I disabled the sector protection detection in the cfi driver (see patch). Comments are welcome. Is there anybody out there who uses the cfi driver and _really_ protected flash sectors (not the software based protection used by u-boot)? If not, we could perhaps disable the protection detection mechanism completely. Also because the used mechanism is not part of the cfi specification. [U-Boot-Users] NAND hardware ECC

It looks like we're going to be wanting to use hardware ecc on our board (since the S3C2410 supports it and our u-boot loader only has code space to use hardware ecc). It would appear that u-boot's 3 byte ecc is not compatible with the hardware algorithm used by the S3C2410 (whatever that algorithm is, I have been unable to find any documentation on it). So, I would like to add support for hardware ecc to cmd_nand.c. Before I embark on this, I wanted to check to see if anyone else is working on this or had preferences as to how it should be done? Just had a configuration that failed to work so I'm after a sanity check to see if others see it. In net/net.c, the netconsole path through the code seems to depend on 'serverip' being set in a couple of places (i.e. a couple of switch statements have TFTP and NETCONS as the same condition). Is this right? [U-Boot-Users] Ebony (440GP) fails to bootp in Linux after U-Boot...

Hi, I've been using the the IBM booter that comes with the Ebony and successfully booted my Linux kernel (2.6.8.1 based) on the Ebony. This includes the IBM booter doing tftp, then the kernel running bootp/dhcp and mounting the nfs smoothly. Lately I've been trying to move to u-boot. Although installation of u-boot to the flash and booting u-boot went quite fine, I'm unable to finish the kernel boot process. First I generated a kernel for the IBM booter using the make and tftp-loaded zImage.ebony. Everything works fine. Then switched to the u-boot flash (using U46 SW1). Then I generated the linux kernel using "make uImage", using "tftpbootm 0x500000 /somewhere/uImage ; bootm 0x50000". (IBM booter used same 0x500000 address). It loads nicely then just keeps trying to "BOOTP". Configuring the IP by hand just moves the problem later to the NFS mounting process since no ethernet traffic exists. I did notice that the kernel doesn't automatically load the u-boot MAC address correctly (kernel originally showed MAC is ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff on u-boot), so for the time being I patched the source of the MAC and inserted it by hand into the kernel code (now the kernel shows the correct MAC when booting). Again, this runs fine on the IBM booter. However, after I boot using u-boot, there doesn't seem to be any traffic coming from the kernel (monitored using ethereal). I turned on some debugging features in the 440GP EMAC driver, and it seems that the EMAC driver gets request to transmit the BOOTP request, but nothing comes in or out. Hi everyone, I am using arm-linux GCC 3.3 with GlibC 2.3.2. I have managed to compile a Linux version 2.6 kernel with this setup and patches for Logic PD card engine LPD7A400. [U-Boot-Users] Switching of LCD controller before reboot?

Hi there, my i.MX based board does not reboot but hangs when doing "reset" (on u-boot) or "reboot" (on linux) when the internal LCD contoller is enabled. Thus I have to disable the LCD contoller before doing that. Something else: The AT91RM9200DK needs to "shutdown the console to avoid strange chars during reset". So my question is: Where would be the appropriate place for stuff like that? Should we clobber cpu/arm920t/cpu.c with all the processor or board specific reset related stuff? Or would it be better to have something like cpu_init, /* basic cpu dependent setup */ board_init, /* basic board dependent setup */ ... cpu_reset, /* basic cpu dependent reset */ board_reset, /* basic board dependent reset */ or prepare_reset based on defines like CONFIG_BOARD_PRE_RESET or something? I had a question about the latest version of net/net.c scenario is as follows. 1. u-boot initiates a tftp transfer 2. u-boot sets a flag "NetArpWaitPacketMAC = 1" 3. u-boot sends ARP Request on network to find the MAC address of tftp server 4. server is a little slow, and u-boot has not yet received the ARP so, u-boot sends ARP Request on network to find the MAC address of tftp server 5. tftp server responds back to first request with it's MAC address, and u-boot sees this, and accepts it. 6. u-boot sets the flag "NetArpWaitPacketMAC = 0" as it got the ARP reply 7. tftp server responds back to second request with it's MAC address, and u-boot sees this, and accepts it. At this point as u-boot is not waiting (NetArpWaitPacketMAC is 0) for ARP reply breaks out of the switch that handles ARP reply. But this break is not to return from the complete handler and thus falls into RARP handler code. 8. u-boot prints out "invalid RARP header". Hi! I'm trying to debug u-boot 1.1.1 using a EPI Majic JTAG probe for arm processors on an PXA255. I load the compiled elf-binary down using the JTAG, and try to run it. I get immediately a "Hardware instruction breakpoint" message. Other binaries run without problems using the JTAG. Also when i flash u-boot it works. I am debugging flash driver for MPC8555CDS board. The driver is drivers/cfi_flash.c. I have two boards. One is rev 1.0, with AM29LV641D. The other is rev 1.1, with AM29LV641M. The problem is polling DQ6 after programming. The current driver in U-boot 1.1.2 works well for AM29LV641M. As for AM29LV641D, the programming hangs after writing about 13KB. I track it down to "flash_is_busy()" function. When the problem occurs, the DQ6 keeps toggling. If I change the algorithm to polling DQ7, no problem occurs. Shawn has a similar problem http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2004-March/009402.html. Maybe we should use DQ7 rather than DQ6. Another issue is the CFI driver might not work for all CFI compatible flash. For example, Micro MT28F640J3. Micro uses status register instead of DQ# polling. The BDI2000 can then load the to-be-programmed data into a RAM buffer (which is fast) and run the helper program to program the RAM buffer data into flash. This obviously is the faster method, but requires more things to be operational on the board and with the processor. Without the "workspace" command, the BDI2000 programs the data into flash directly which is considerably slower since bit-shifting the commands to do the write and poll for completion, etc. are much less efficient than the workspace method. This is slow but sure and only requires CPU and flash functionality to work. You apparently have a problem with the RAM set up in your config file or a hardware problem with your RAM (in that order of likelyhood). I forgot which processor you have, but most or all of the 8xx/8xxx processors have dual port RAM that you can also use for a workspace. Using this is much less complicated than getting SDRAM configured properly in the BDI2000 config file. Trivia: WD recommends (wisely!) that you do _not_ do the SDRAM initialization in the BDI2000 config file. [U-Boot-Users] Another RTL8139 problem

Hi all, I have a strange problem with RTL8139 driver on my dev board (hidden dragon-MPC 8241). Some of you might remember my question regarding setting _IO_BASE for the RTL8139. I have that one solved by setting it to (believe it or not) 0x00000000. Seems like the dev->iobase is set correctly to the device memory space without needing extra _IO_BASE. I verified this by doing memory dump with BDI2000 at the iobase address. To test my settings, I enabled the PING command. The network module was able to detect the presence of the link and to send packet out (I used ethereal on the other end to sniff the packets). My development machine also replied with the appropriate packet as reported by ethereal. Now the problem is that the RTL8139 did not recieve any packet (ChipCmd & RxEmptyBuf != 0) at any time. What could be the problem? Is anybody else using RTL8139 in u-boot? What is your experience? Thanks, Yusdi

I removed the "WORKSPACE" option in the [FLASH] section and the "prog" command worked well albeit much slower. Not sure why it is so...anybody can explain why? Obviously masses of the hush functionality has been removed using the __U_BOOT__ #define but some bits that are left seem to be not relevant to the bootloader environment. I'm particularly confused by the pipe operators '&' and '|' and how they are used in u-boot. Is this just a mistake? or am I (as usual) missing something... Folks, While reading through the source code for the TQM860L board, I have found some comment cards (and related functional details) that are puzzling me. I read Table 15.4 of the Motorola MPC860 Family Users Manual which explains the format of the OR registers. If I understand it correctly, the definition of CFG_PRELIM_OR_AM limits the size of the Flash address range by masking out bits 0,1 and 2. Why are only three bits removed ? Also, what puzzles me is the comment: restrict access enough to keep SRAM working (if any) but not too much to meddle with FLASH accesses Why do we have to restrict access to keep SRAM working ? [U-Boot-Users] U-Boot not working on TQM860L

Hi, I'm am trying to bring up U-Boot on my TQM860L (8M flash), and have some difficulties. The instructions are simple and straight forward (I compile with the TQM860_config parameter). The burning of the u-boot.bin file is successful (address 0x40000000). However, when turning on the power, the system does not respond! The terminal is dead. I know that the system is functional, because other bootstrap programs, such as the TQC monitor, work fine. Are there any configurations that should be changed in the TQM860L.h configuration file? Any other ideas that might help? Thanks, Rami.
