Greetings Having just about finished the porting of u-boot to the Motorola mpc866ads board, I'm checking my work by diffing against the current CVS. Can someone tell me how I exclude all the CVS directories from the diff as I want to avoid cvs diff since sf is sooooo slooooowwww. I am using u-boot to boot an EP8260 board. However once I load/tftp Kernel ELF file to 0x400000 and try to run the kernel from 0x410000, it crashes... I used the same ELF file with Embedded planet's boot loader and it works fine. Any pointers.... [U-Boot-Users] U-Boot hangs with L1 data cache

Hello, I've got a problem enabling the L1 data cache. It hangs U-Boot when enabled using the command, "dcache on". It also hangs if I attempt to enable the caches during U-Boot's start up. The L1 instruction cache can be enabled without any problem. The code appears to hang ( ie. I lose all console output ) when the instruction, mtspr HID0, r3, is executed in the function, dcache_enable, which sets the DCE bit in the HID0 register. I don't see a problem with any of the code. Anyone else experience this problem and know a solution? I'm currently porting U-Boot to the Motorola PrPMC800 board which implements the MPC7410 processor. At the moment I keep all caches and BATs disabled when U-Boot executes. I have the code which would enable the data cache and BATs temporarily commented out in the file, cpu/74xx_7xx/start.S. I did this because when I first started my porting exercise I found code the snippet below, from cpu/74xx_7xx/start.S, caused U-Boot to hang. I don't need the caches enabled to boot as the board has 2 kiBytes of static ram at a fix location in memory available. I use it to implement the stack until SDRAM is configured instead of the stack in data cache trick ( #define CFG_INIT_RAM_LOCK ). I haven't even found any reason to use the BATs as of yet. Linux configures these for itself when it boots anyway. Wolfgang, you say that most targets link to the NV address instead of the execution address. Doesn't this make it difficult to debug? Instead, I changed the u-boot.lds file (not for KEV7A400) to properly set the load address and the execution address.

I'm porting u-boot to the Sharp KEV7A400 development board. The CPU has an ARM9 core with some Sharp and some ARM cells. The existing ARM920T cpu code has quite a bit of Samsung specific code in it. So, the question is this: how do we best handle development like this? For time time being, I'm creating a new CPU directory to eliminate a ridiculous set of ifdefs. However, this may not be a good long-term solution. I've been musing about solving the problem and have come up with some ideas, though nothing yet comprehensivve. 1) It seems to be a mistake to put manufacturer specific code in the CPU directory unless we equate CPU not to the *core* but to the implementation of the core. For example, not x86, but AMD Elan. Not ARM920T but Sharp LH7a400. In the embedded market, this makes more sense than it does for x86 PCs. 2) There are some board-specific driver choices, e.g. serial driver, that sometimes appear in the CPU directory. Perhaps these choices are best made in the board directory instead. 3) Drivers, such as serial, could be made to export a function table. This would allow driver selection by choosing which file to compile and link. At this point, I'm looking to start a discussion about this. I've seen the same kinds of problems twice, now. I'd like to find out how best to fix them. Cheers.

Hi Wolfgang, i've tried to get the latest version of u-boot via cvs.. It seems that there is a lock file #cvs.lock in the directory u-boot/board/eltec Can you check this ? I've also tried to get the latest tarball. But the tarball is from Monday... I thought the tarball should be generated every night. thanks, Juergen

Thanks for the hint Carolyn, I made some progress but... When I map my flash using MMAP I can now debug code in flash using BDI/gdb. But I cannot access the SDRAM - bdi returns "#invalid argumet" for any SDRAM address. If I also MMAP may SDRAM region I can access/run/debug code from flash and SDRAM but only using BDI. When attaching gdb I loose access to flash and SDRAM, like without any MMAP command. (The same behaviour occurs after BDI start, when I access some SDRAM addresses in BDI. Because SDRAM access is not yet initialized it is an error(somehow), but also flash is not accessible after that (return all "0")). I guess that the gdb (when attaching to BDI/target) is accessing some invalid memory region -> access to all memory/flash is lost. I only flash is MMAPed the invalid access is hidden and I can debug code in flash. Question: What memory is accessed by gdb (when connecting to BDI) that is not yet initialized? Dear all, How could I turn on the MTD support in u-boot? I don’t know how to do that? I want to use the setenv command to set (assume I used 32MB Flash) mtd0 0x00000000,0x00040000 → u-boot mtd1 0x00040000,0x000E0000 → kernel mtd2 0x000E0000,0x01F00000 → filesystem mtd3 0x01F00000,0x01FF0000 → reserved the left space 0x01FF0000,0x02000000 → for env Then the kernel will get those parameters to set MTD. Hi there, has someone patched U-Boot to "support" the MPC857T? AFAIK it's basicly a MPC855T. So the only change would be to avoid a boot message like: CPU: unknown MPC855 (0x07000003) at 80 MHz: 4 kB I-Cache 4 kB D-Cache FEC present *** Warning: CPU Core has Silicon Bugs -- Check the Errata *** Thanks, Steven

I have recently been going through this same problem. I also have a working U-Boot so I didn't bother with any DRAM initialization in my BDI2000 config file but found I couldn't see my boot ROM code or get the target started properly from the BDI2000. The key for me ended up being the MMAP command to get access to the boot ROM address range. For example MMAP 0xFFF00000 0xFFF7FFFF Once I had that I could see the U-Boot code again using 'md 0xfff00100' and start the target running using 'go'. Hope this helps. Hi all, Can some one point me to where u-boot get sector information for non-CFI flashes in the code? I'm trying to use AM29LV320DT with the IBM walnut based board. When I changed the code so that it recognizes the flash, it came up with sector information that is not correct. Also, this particular part has different size sectors for erase/program and protection. Would this be a problem with u-Boot? Hallo all, we recently purchased a BDI2000 to debug some of our products. I have u-boot-0.4.0 running on our board with a MPC8245. For a first test I connected the BDI2000 and at the telnet window a can see the u-boot code (md 0xfff00100) and can single-step through it. 1) general question: I removed DRAM etc initialization from the config. file because it will be initialized from the u-boot code. Will it work that way or is DRAM access needed for proper work of BDI2000/gdb? 2) Problem: Now I start the gdb and attach it to the BDI2000 ((gdb) target remote bdi:2001) After that I cannot see the code in flash anymore - md command in telnet window returns all "0". Disassemble in gdb also returns all "0". What did I make wrong? Thanks for your help. Torsten

The reason that I went for the penguinppc kernel is that they had already done a lot of work towards supporting the MPC8266 board, including the PCI support, and as I don't really have the background to write my own drivers (someday, maybe ) I thought that this would be my best option - so far this hasn't been the case, unfortunately. I had suspected that I didn't need `clocks_in_mhz' as the kernel version that penguinppc provides is very new ( 2.4.21 ). The relationship of some of the addresses escapes me, I must admit - I thought that the load address and entry point of the kernel would be mapped to the loading point specified in u-boot by default ( 0x100000 ). Any input that you have would be most welcome, and in the interim I will try configuring a kernel directly from kernel.org rather than rely on the penguinppc one. That seems to be my most immediate problem, judging from the successes that others have enjoyed using u-boot.
