Hello, u-boot-users, Below is the copy of my message posted yesterday to arm-linux mailing list. I didn't get a reply yet but I believe this list is better choice :) ========================== Recently I bought ebook reading device called REB1100 (www.rca.com). It is built on ARM720T microprocessor, has 64Kb of Atmel 27LV512 EPROM with romfs (bios), 8Mb of NAND flash, Cirrus Logic EP7212 chip with LCD controller and audio. Also it has modem, SMC interface, IR interface and... cool rubber surface :) Now the question. Is it somehow possible to install [arm/uc]linux there? I study related materials on armlinx website, on uclinux.org, ucdot and some others but yet can't realize from what to start. Here are results of my "investigations". First, this CPU has MMU so I can't decide what do I need: uClinux or ARM linux :) [What was confused me - uClinux is for non-MMU machines, but there are patches for ARM7DMI CPU] When REB1100 starts it executes code from EPROM. The program there implementing simple filesystem, has USB driver and some logic which allow it to install and run 'firmware' (OS, Reader): it is possible to do all this in special DEBUG mode with a tool called "rebhack". Lets call it BIOS. The firmware is on NAND Flash. As I understand, BIOS do some checks and then runs [or not runs if checks are failed] the OS. Firmware has extension .rff and is compressed. It has 512 bytes header which contains some control and descriptive fields, among them there is Execution Address. It points to exactly 1Mb. I hope it is possible to install Linux onto NAND Flash without changing EPROM. I believe, to do that, it is enough to make special .rff which contains boot loader. I have images of OS and BIOS but can't find disassembler for ARM7 CPU (can you recommend one? Is there a modification of objdump for ARM?) ========================== An hour ago I've got the sources of U-Boot and read README file on top level. From there I realized two things: 1) To get U-Boot image I have to start a new board. 2) U-Boot is installed into ROM, so I'll need to re-burn EPROM. It is not really a problem for me, but as I said above, I would be happy not to touch it and do all the stff in NAND Samsung Flash. I look forward to your answers. Hi all, I'm trying to boot motorola's FADS823 eval. board with U-boot 0.2.0. Hi, I know when I want to port u-boot to a new board,I can find a similar board in u-boot and modify it to my new board.But how I know which board is similar with my new board?e.g.POWERPC and SDRAM's pins connection. Best Regards!

I've come across a problem using the ELF loader, the existing one relocates the data in the ELF image using section headers. This prevented a LynxOS image I have being loaded correctly. I was lead to believe by the ELF standard that section headers are for linking, not loading and execution. I have reimplemented the ELF loader using program headers, this is shown in the code snippet below. (The original code is left in for reference but commmented out) Can anyone tell me if there is a valid reason for the way it was done originally? hi I use a board with a 32bit flash chip with u-boot-0.2.0. It works fine. I need the redundant copy of the environment data and there is a problem. The command saveenv writes correctly the environment data into the defined sector of the flash, but can't deactivate/activate one of the environment sectors if it's not empty. This change works on my board (self-development) fine. Reason (only in german, sorry): Mit der If-Anweisung moechte man sicherstellen, dass nicht versucht wird ein 0-Bit mit einem 1-Bit zu ueberschreiben. FLASH_WORD_SIZE ist auf unsigned short definiert. Die Adressierung des Flashes finget 32Bit-weise statt, d.h. dest und data sind 32Bit lang. Falls beim savenv einer der Sektoren aktiviert oder deaktiviert werden soll, dann unterscheiden sich dest und data lediglich in dem 17-ten Bit (das Flag). "*((volatile FLASH_WORD_SIZE *) dest)" liefert die zwei Byte aus dem Flash, die ueberschreiben werden sollen; die oberen zwei Bytes der 32Bit. "(FLASH_WORD_SIZE) data" hingegen liefert die unteren zwei Bytes von data. Es muessten aber auch die oberen sein. Man koennte die If-Anweisung an der Stelle lassen, an der sie stand und nur die Typecasts weglassen, damit die gesammten 32Bit miteinander verglichen werden. Da gibt es noch ein Problem (* auf ulong), dass aber sicherlich loesbar ist. Ich kenne mich damit nicht so gut aus. Gruesse Bogdan

hi I use u-boot-0.2.0 with hush shell. I'm trying to write a script that check which kernel should be used. If $runtest ist defined (or equal a specific value) then use kernel1 else use kernel2 I have problem to define the condition. Can anybody help me? best Bogdan

Hi, I just compiled the U-Boot code from the CVS and got an error. It seems to me setjmp.h is missing which is included in sched.c. The compiler can't find the setjmp() declaration. While browsing through the could I found the __ASSEMBLY__ macro in some codes, which in- or excludes some declarationen if defined. What's about this __ASSEMBLY__ macro and how can I use it. Hey all, I have a MPC860T board which can have one or two FLASH chips on it. When one FLASH chip is on it it is used in 16bit mode, if two FLASH chips are present it is used in 32 bit mode ( 2 * 16bit FLASH chips in parallel ). The initial chip select is set by a hardware jumper with the reset-word. U-Boot only allows on setup for BR0/OR0 and resets the bus width, so i hacked the chip select initialization part to not reset the bus width. The question is should u-boot not all ways leave the bus width of CS0 alone ? An other thing that happens is that i didn't really find a generic way to do flash programming. All boards seem to have their own (copied from each other) flash routines. Would it be possible to have more generic FLASH routines, and for example have a config option to select which FLASH chips are possible (to maybe save space)? - Erwin -- Dipl.-Ing. Hi, attached is a fix for the recently reported problem with the SMSC91111 ethernet driver. It looks like it was a combination of two bugs. The patch was tested on a PXA250 system (Innokom) here and on a SA1110 based DNP (thanks to Rolf Offermanns) and it seems to be a proper fix (although we still don't understand all of the symptoms). Hello, Today I've fixed two major things: - installed ELDK @Suse Linux 8.1 - compiled U-Boot for BAB7xx board Some questions are left: - make (command) Is this a standard Linux/Unix command? How does it know which GNU Compiler to use? - make all (command) What does it do? According to which paramters and which files? - Can a make a script file to set the compiler parameters like: export CROSS_COMPILE = ppc_74xx- - What is BASH$ - Where should I start to make a suitable U-Boot configuration for my own PrPMC Board: - MPC7410 - Marvell Galileo GT-64260 - 2MB Cache - 8MB Flash memory - 64MB SDRAM - One ehternet port connected (on P14 of the PMC) - Is there a pre-defined configuration which looks like this configuration? When I execute step-by-step this code, the instruction mtmsr makes the CPU to jump to 0x700. I suspect it is due to the uncorrect script I use for the Abatron BDI2000. For convenience I copied it at the bottom of the message. I derived it from the example shipped with the BDI that is written for the 405GP board (Walnut). In order to simulate the state of the hardware just after a reset, I removed a lot of initializations. Can someone please enlighten me on the relationship between u-boot's env variable "bootargs" which gets passed to the linux kernel, and the CONFIG_CMDLINE kernel configuration setting in .config? Which one takes precedence if CONFIG_CMDLINE_BOOL is set and CONFIG_CMDLINE has a string in it? I'm running an ebony system with u-boot, booting a MontaVista 3.0 kernel. I have modified MV's version of ebony.c to copy the bootargs env info to "cmd_line", and this info is displayed when the kernel boots up, but I don't think the kernel is really using this. If I'm using bootargs from u-boot, do I have to disable CONFIG_CMDLINE_BOOL in the kernel .config? Thanks. Erik

If the PowerTAP PRO is the only means you have of loading code to your target, then you'll need to use BOTH machines: the Linux machine to host the ELDK, and the Windows machine to host the PowerTAP PRO. The easiest thing to do is set up Samba on Linux, to create a network directory that the Windows machine can access. Otherwise, you'll be running back and forth with a floppy disk. (You probably already knew this.)

Hi, I've just tried to track down the SMSC driver problem which was recently reported on this list. After the MMU allocates a block for a sent packet in smc_send_packet() there is a FIXME comment in the sourcecode: - when I add puts("x"); after this comment it works. - when I remove it it hangs. - when I add the content of the putx() function (the register operations) to the same location it hangs. - when I add a function containing the register operation and call this function after the comment it hangs. - when I add a function which calls the function from the last step it works - this is the same constellation as with the puts() call. All this looks like some kind of a memory management or stack problem for me; perhaps anybody else has an idea what might go on? Robert -- Dipl.-Ing. Hello, Personnaly, I use U-Boot under linux (Red Hat 7.2) but should be similar with a suse 8.1. For cross compiler and other I use the ELDK 2.0 from DENX. I would really love to see the memory map problem on ARM being fixed before Wolfgang makes a new release. The problem is that ARMboot had the malloc area above the relocated bootloader, u-boot has it below. I have fixed this for my two PXA250 board (CSB226, Innokom) and I have a patch for lib_arm/board.c which was rejected by Wolfgang in. Now we have the situation that some boards do work with the current code, but don't follow the memory map stated in the README and some others do, but don't work without the patch. IMHO the correct thing to do is to fix the other ARM boards to use the correct memory map. Wolfgang, what is your position? Robert -- Dipl.-Ing. Hi, It doesn't start though it is trying to use U-boat on the FADS862T at present. Will there be a wrong point about the way of building it? Or, is it wrong from building of the environment? My environment is as the following. PC : VMware 3.2.0 OS : RedHat Linux 8.0 (with Japanese support) gcc etc. : ELDK 2.0.2 U-Boot 0.2.0 released (CVS isn't being used.) Debug interface : BDI2000 It does as the following on this, and it is being built. # export CROSS_COMPILE=ppc_8xx- # make clean # make FADS860T_config # make all The S-file which it could get in this more is being written via the BDI2000. A .cfg file uses the attached one for ADS860 for the adapter. Warning and an error were only warning by the start.S here. It is written in the IMMR register, and it is a place to jump to init_board_f, and an exception seems to occur. Only, action seems to vary according to the setup of the break point, and a cause can't be grasped. Incidentally, it seemed that the binary of the source written in the FlashROM was correct. To the point which it jumped, though it isn't being followed, Won't I be able to accept anyone advice? # This mail changes with a translation machine from Japanese.
