I was trying to load linux-2.4.4 in FADS860T board using u-boot-1.0.0. I have settted environment variables like ipaddr,serverip,ethaddr,bootargs bootfile and saved the environment. Then,i typed tftpboot to download image from server. Then,i typed bootm to start the booting process. System is stucked by showing "Uncompressing Kernel Image ... OK" sequence of these events r given below.can u please suggest, what i need to do to come out from this. Thank you. [U-Boot-Users] ECC DIMM's with walnut board

Hi all, I tried to boot a walnut board with a 256 ECC DIMM using u-boot 0.3.0, but didn't succeed. When examining the code in the function spd_sdram in cpu/ppc4xx/spd_sdram, I found that the ECC configuration code is probably wrong. I suppose, that the following lines /* now check for ECC ability of module. So ECC is enabled for such a device which fails in the following. The changed code works for me with several DIMM types (32MB without ECC, 256 MB with ECC and without ECC), but I'm not an expert with all types of SDRAM and so I'm not sure if I fully understood the code in that place. Any ideas, comments? Hello I have attached a number of patches wich updates Uboot to my current version for i386. Some common files are touched, mostly small changes except for the IDE driver which I made some more changes for code readability and 386 support, I hope that it still works for the PPC case. We're in the process of moving some features of our in house boot-loader over to u-boot. I present the features to the mailing list in case someone else is working in anything similar, and would like to coordinate our efforts. o VLAN support and TOS configuration and support. o Two level access password support. o Different boot-modes. o Cisco router like command interface with history and command completion. o UDP-based same-LAN terminal access. o Factory testing framework. o More DHCP parameters support. o CDP support. o DHCP lease time information passed to the loaded kernel. You don't have to map you flash at 0xFF000000; you could chose any other address as well (but this isn't your problem here). The second error is the "of course at 0xFFF00100". It could be at 0x100 as well, depending on the CIP/BMS settings in your HRCW. We fixed exactly such a problem once. In the old version of the code some internal data structures of the NFTL driver, which are initialized only at boot-time, become invalid after you run nftl_format. See my message "DOC / NFTL problem, and fix" from Aug 28, 2002, to the MTD mailing list: http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2002-August/005853.html I don't know if they ever accepted the patch, and/or if it is included with your version of the MTD tools. Kenneth, what type of (32 bit wide device) SDRAM is the ECC configuration piece for? As far as I understood the walnut manual, DIMM's are always designed as 64 bit devices (which can be used as 32 bit devices, but not in ECC mode). Wolfgang, please find attached a patch for the cpu/ppc4xx/spd_sdram file. The ECC configuration code in function spd_sdram is changed so that 72 bit ECC DIMM's are used in non-ECC mode. Using those DIMM's in ECC mode doesn't work on the walnut board. If working, it would make probably no sense, because only the half of the DIMM size can be used in ECC mode. CFG_MONITOR_LEN in include/configs/WALNUT405.h was changed to 256, because 192 was too small for the configuration provided with u-boot-0.3.0 Maybe the patch is of some use for the project. Hello, I finally got my Linux system complete with cross-compiler set up last week and took a shot at building u-boot this morning. Things went along nicely until; astest.c - in main - 'true' undeclared Ok, so I search the mailing list and find that a previous question about astest.c exists, that astest.c is not considered all that important ( by the responder ), and that the question doesn't address what I see. There is CFI support for the Intel command set in ppmc8260/strataflash.c and esd/cpic440/strataflash.c. This driver correctly sizes the flash width and number of chips. What is missing is an abstraction to support multiple command sets. Hi all, I compiled u-boot 0.3.0 for the walnut board and run it, it was working fine. Then I replaced the shipped 32MB DIMM module with a 256MB DIMM module with ECC and the board hang: U-Boot 0.3.0 (Apr 25 2003 - 12:10:17) CPU: IBM PowerPC 405GP Rev. E at 200 MHz (PLB=100, OPB=50, EBC=50 MHz) PCI sync clock at 33 MHz, internal PCI arbiter enabled 16 kB I-Cache 8 kB D-Cache Board: WALNUT405-EVB_22 I2C: ready DRAM: 256 MB ***hang*** I examined the function spd_sdram in cpu/ppc4xx/spd_sdram.c and found that the ECC Correction Enable bits in the SDRAM0_ECCCFG register are set to 1 when ECC DIMM is detected. I removed this setting and the board was working without any problems. The 405GP Reference board manual says that using an ECC DIMM on a walnut board, only half of the total DIMM size is available if it is enabled for ECC, but this seems not to work on my board. Has anyone tried out to run the walnut board with ECC DIMM's? What DIMM's did you use? The DIMM I was trying is Infineon HYS72V32220GU (256MB, PC133-222-520). Hello everyone, I've finished porting U-boot 0.3.0 to my MPX823 board. It contains a 512KB 29LV040 that boots u-boot, an extra 8MB DiskOnChip Millenium, and an Ethernet controller (it contains other hardware as well, but that's not relevant). I can now successfully boot the board into Linux by tftp'ing the kernel, and using root nfs (exported NFS is /opt/eldk/ppc_8xx - thanks Worlfgang!). I compiled my own kernel based on the latest linuxppc_2_4 CVS branch. I can successfully access my DiskOnchip under both u-boot and Linux. I now want to boot my board from the on-board Flash. In an ideal world, I would like the DiskOnChip to be: 1. Partition into one or more partitions 2. Boot the kernel from a file in one of the partitions (could be FAT) 3. mount root from separate partition, (if kernel is on FAT), or same partition as the kernel (if possible). I'm slightly confused as to the status of JFFS2, DOS partitioning, DOS FAT/VFAT, and the DiskOnChip support. More specifically: 1. As far as I can tell, the only DiskOnChip support are the "doc read" and "doc write" commands, therefore if I use these commands I must load the kernel directly off the raw sectors - no filesystem support whatsoever. Am I correct? 2. Does the "doc read" and "doc write" use the NFTL layer, or do they access the raw device sectors? 3. As far as I can tell, the FAT support is hardwired to the floppy controller device, and the DOS partition support is wired to the IDE support. Am I right? It seems to me it is quite trivial to construct a simple interface (a struct containing the block device geometry, plus a pointer to sector read function), and have both the partitioning and the DOS FAT code access this. This could help support DOS filesystems on D.O.C, floppies and IDE devices. 4. What is the best way to achieve my requirements above? (booting a kernel from a filesystem on the D.O.C). Can JFFS2 help me in any way? 5. Failing all the above, can I partition the device under Linux into 2 partitions, write down the sector range for the 1st partition, and use it to read/write the kernel using the "doc read" and "doc write interface"? I would then mount the 2nd partition after booting the kernel. thanks, Udi

Thanks to Stefan Roese, I think I definitely solved this bothering problem. It seems the cause is a "hidden" memory access to an invalid location (for example to an address in the SDRAM region before memory controller has been initialized). When stepping through the MTMSR instruction, it seems GDB generates some of these accesses even if the user does not perform a memory read (I suspect such an access is performed to the address contained in the EVPR register). I solved the problem by initializing the SDRAM controller even if the code to be debugged does not need it. This way all accesses to locations ranging from 0x00000000 to 0x08000000 are "well-behaved" and don't cause any exception. llandre

Hello, I'm attempting to build u-boot for the evb64260 brd. I'm doing so on a WinNT4 host with a Cygwin environment and a powerpc-elf cross compiler ( a Linux env is not an option ). Hi there, We use AMD and Fujitsu mirrorbit Flash chips on our custom board. It works fine with U-Boot since Mirrorbit flash command operations are the same as classical AMD parts. However few specifications change between classical and mirrorbit flashes : - Programming time is 100us with mirrorbit (16 us for classical), and because of this : - Mirrorbit allow to write several words in one command (write buffer programming) If you want full support for Mirrorbit flashes in U-Boot, you have simply to code the write buffering feature. I do not use this, so standard AMD/Fujitsu/ST code is working fine for me. Wolfang Hi. In U-boot currently ARP is use for the single purpose, of providing the MAC address of the TFTP server. This make it impossible to use ARP for communicating with any other host or protocol. Also it muddles the tftp code since in order to begin the TFTP request, we don't call TftpStart rather we call ArpRequest and the tftp request is started explicitly upon reception of the ARP reply. The following patch fixes these problems. Instead of the TFTP code using NetSendPacket it uses now a new function called NetSendUDPPacket. int NetSendUDPPacket(uchar *ether, IPaddr_t dest, int dport, int sport, int len); The argument are as follows; uchar *ether - pointer to MAC address of the server/or gateway. If the MAC address is zero, an ARP request is made and the packet is saved for transmition upon the reception of the ARP reply. Must point to a global or static variable for proper operation. IPaddr_t dest - destination ip address int dport - destination port int sport - source port int len - the length of the data. The actual contents of the transmitted packet are expected to be at NetTxPacket + ETHER_HDR_SIZE + IP_HDR_SIZE. The major change of this patch is the elimination of the files arp.c & arp.h. ARP is not really a proper protocol, and their functionality is placed directly in net.c Tested both in manual tftp mode and DHCP auto-start mode... Awaiting comments... Does anyone know of support for the AMD MirrorBit FLASH parts? For example, the AM29LV256M - 256MB, x8/x16 data width. There's really not much to change compared to strataflash but I thought I'd ask in case someone's already done it. I don't see anything in the source tree but I could be wrong. - Tom

hi, While compiling u-boot for the LART board , i am getting the following errors from the version checked out from CVS make lart_config make /home/rm/u-boot/include/asm/io.h:25: asm/memory.h: No such file or directory On adding the file from linux kernel sources (memory.h), it proceeds but stops at another place. cpu/sa1100/libsa1100.a(interrupts.o): In function `show_regs': /home/rm/arm_linux/u-boot/cpu/sa1100/interrupts.c:115: undefined reference to `thumb_mode' /home/rm/arm_linux/u-boot/cpu/sa1100/interrupts.c:115: relocation truncated to fit: R_ARM_PC24 thumb_mode make: *** [u-boot] Error 1 although interrupts.c has ptrace.h included Am i missing something ? rgds rm _________________________________________________________________ Windows Server 2003. I saw a patch to boot ARTOS with U-boot, and noticed that my RTEMS patch didn't make it into 0.3.0. (it also doesn't show up in the SourceForge CVS ). Greetings: If someone out there has a 405GP running with u-boot, I'd really appreciated a snapshot of the interrupt vector table. It appears that though the vector and and the int return vector are getting copied, however if prior to running u-boot I zero out all memory in the IVT, I see that not Prologue code etc is getting coping into those ares. If I look at "trap_init" it appears as though it does not copy code, and only sets vectors. If I look at "relocate_code" it appears as though it only starts to copy code from the top of the boot rom to the end. I do not see where the interrupt vectors are stored in the bootrom - although they must - so I must be missing a simple calculation someplace - Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Jerry Walden

Should the divisor in get_tbclk( ) be 8L for the MPC8245? (I know there are several '8245 and '8241 boards using PPCBoot and/or U-Boot, so my guess is that the manual is wrong, but I didn't see anything in the errata about this.)

Hi, It doesn't start though it is trying to use U-boat on the FADS862T at present. Will there be a wrong point about the way of building it? Or, is it wrong from building of the environment? My environment is as the following. PC : VMware 3.2.0 OS : RedHat Linux 8.0 (with Japanese support) gcc etc. : ELDK 2.0.2 U-Boot 0.2.0 released (CVS isn't being used.) Debug interface : BDI2000 It does as the following on this, and it is being built. # export CROSS_COMPILE=ppc_8xx- # make clean # make FADS860T_config # make all The S-file which it could get in this more is being written via the BDI2000. A .cfg file uses the attached one for ADS860 for the adapter. Warning and an error were only warning by the start.S here. It is written in the IMMR register, and it is a place to jump to init_board_f, and an exception seems to occur. Only, action seems to vary according to the setup of the break point, and a cause can't be grasped. Incidentally, it seemed that the binary of the source written in the FlashROM was correct. To the point which it jumped, though it isn't being followed, Won't I be able to accept anyone advice? # This mail changes with a translation machine from Japanese. Just after posting the message "Interrupt management under PPC4xx platform", I noticed the thread "405Gpr timer interrupt" describing the same problem I encountered with the Ethernet interface (I work with the 405EP eval. board). I think it is due to the incorrect interrupt management, too. For this reason, and since this is my first experience with U-Boot, I posted the message "Interrupt management under PPC4xx platform" http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=1968232&forum_id=128…. Hi there, I think would should realy reset the MPC8xx's internal RTC when calling "date reset" or "rtc_reset" instead of "nothing to do". Please find and consider the attached patch. Background: I have seen it several times, that the MPC8xx's internal RTC contains an invalid date, e.g. negative times (caused by no or low battery). That might result in dates before 1970-01-01 under Linux and that in turn confuses timeouts. I've seen that udhcpc (from busybox) hangs in such cases! For that reason u-boot should check for valid dates and do a rtc_reset() if nessesary. But I can't mount NFS -> timeout error . For my initrd I use the ram image from Denx. Any known problem in "mount" from busybox ? Any ideas ? Thanks. Chris

I have some questions about the interrupt management under the PPC4xx platform (I'm working with the 405EP evaluation board). 1) At the beginning of the boot code, the EVPR is cleared. The OpenBIOS, whose boot code is substantally the same, sets the EVPR to 0xFFF80000, that is the start address of the Flash. Why do they use such a different approach? 2) I don't understand how the code of vectors is relocated by the trap_init function. Once the whole code is copied from Flash to SDRAM by the relocate_code function, in my understanding the code of vectors is copied again from the end of SDRAM to the start of SDRAM by trap_init. Here r9 is the target address and it set to 0x2100. So why do the interrupt_init function sets the EVPR to 0? Many thanks in advance. llandre

The tools subdirectory builds tools that run on your host computer that are used for building various u-boot related images. You need gcc on your host to accomplish this. It doesn't look like you have the native "development toolset" installed. Type which gcc and it will probably tell you that it cannot find gcc. Hi Can anyone explain to me how to modify/use the u-boot.lds file? I've had to make changes start.S in order to some board specific initializations etc, however if my changes become to "large" u-boot fails to compile. After reading the README I have seen that if changes are made to the u-boot source then u-boot.lds will have to be modified. On looking at this file I am clueless regarding which changes will be required, so any advice would be appreciated. Regards Flavio Pereira

Hi, I download the U-boot from web. I tried to use it in MPC8266ADS, but it is failed. I found that the bootloader hangs in the function "board_init_f" when it running in "init sequence". It successes to pass the "checkboard" function (i see it in COM port). After that, it hangs. I do not change any code and just compile and program the "u-boot" file in flash memory at "0xfff00000". Is there any hardware setup should be done ? I use the default setting to test. Do I need to change the setting ? My confusion came from the following line in the Makefile: -> rm -f u-boot u-boot.bin u-boot.elf u-boot.srec u-boot.map System.map u-boot.elf <- this element did me expect a .ELF file as output of the linker. After reading the readme I'd found out the ELF File is 'u-boot'. Hi! We discovered a problem with the U-Boot DHCP client using the Windows 2000 DHCP Server. We have to use the Windows 2000 DHCP Server upon customer request! The problem occurs when the IP-address of the DHCP-server is not equal to the IP-address of the TFTP-server. In the REQUEST-packet (client->server), the client uses the IP-address from the bootp-header (bp->siaddr - IP address of next bootstrap server) in the ServerID option (#54). This seems to be wrong (the Windows 2000 server doesn't respond with an ACK-packet)! The client has to use the IP-address sent by the server in the ServerID option from the OFFER-packet (server->client). Please find attached a patch with our changes. This code runs without problems against the Windows 2000 DHCP-server and the Linux (Suse 8.0) DHCP-server. Any comments/remarks? Anybody against commiting? Hi What are the kernel source for the ELDK package ? I use some bitkeeper ou timesys kernel source for MPC860 but none have the same option in the config for the MPC. I have just checkouted the u-boot source code from CVS, and: (use arm-linux-gcc 2.95.3) make lubbock_config make then I use JFlash(windows) to install u-boot.bin in my lubbock(pxa250) board, and I use the HyperTerminal as the console tools for inter-action. after power on, I can get the prompt, but if I try to copy RAM data to Flash like: cp 0xa0008000 0x04000000 1024 u-boot complain that flash not erased, but even I use erase bank 2 to erase the whole bank flash, when I use md 0x04000000 to see the value in flash bank 2, I found that the value is same as old, How can I solve this problem, please help me. Hi there, when first accessing an JFFS2 partition from u-boot (e.g. ls) I see a Scanning JFFS2 FS: ..... done That takes over one second. Is that needed? What for? I am just experimenting with an JFFS2 partition with NO compression. That makes my boot process faster, since the kernel and the FPGA data are stored on that partition. Thanks, Steven

I use the u-boot cvs source, linux-2.4.19 kernel, arm-linux patch, and xscale patch. arm-linux-gcc 3.0 as complier,lubbock(pxa250) as platform. arm-linux-objcopy -O binary -R .note -R .comment -S vmlinux linux.bin gzip -9 linux.bin mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C gzip -a 0xa0008000 -e 0xa0008000 -n "Linux Kernel Image" -d linux.bin.gz uImage then under u-boot: =>loadb 0xa0008000 (send the uImage) =>go 0xa0008000 start the application at 0xa0008000 <hang> Could someone help me about this? Hi All, thanx all for ur kind help...the problem was neither due to Memory Mapping nor CRC check... I tried the same old routine method of debugging, which is the best... puts( ).. It was all due to the assignment statement in devices_init( ) in devices.c "gd->flags |= "..... which is declared using DECLARE_GLOBAL_DATA_PTR in asm/global_data.h Well as of now i have commented that, and my board seems to boot fine... But while loading Linux....phew!!! [U-Boot-Users] pxa suspend/resume?

I am using u-boot for my custom PXA250 board and am in the process of trying to get the board to use the power management suspend/resume feature in linux. I am able to put the cpu into suspend mode, but I can never get it to wake-up. I am under the impression that it is the bootloader that needs to handle the wake-up and pass control back to linux. Has anyone been able to add resume support into u-boot for a PXA? Michael

Hi, this is somewhat offtopic, but I know no better place to ask. I'm trying to make the cs8900 ethernet chip on the Cogent CSB226 work with u-boot and Linux. The chip is mapped to 0x08000000 / CS2 and it is connected in I/O mapped mode. However, I do not see anything usefull in u-boot. This is how the port area looks after power on: uboot> md.w 0x08000000 10 (1) (2) (3) 08000000: 0000 a1ff 0000 a1ff 0009 a1ff 0000 a1ff ................ 08000010: 0000 a1ff 3136 a1ff 00d6 a1ff 00d6 a1ff ....61.......... I would have expected the cs8900's magic number (0x0e62 00[03|05]) in the data registers (2),(3). However, when I write 0 to the Packet Page Pointer Port (1) to select register 0: uboot> md.w 0x08000000 10 08000000: 0000 a1ff 0000 a1ff 3109 a1ff 0000 a1ff .........1...... 08000010: 0000 a1ff 3136 a1ff 00d6 a1ff 00d6 a1ff ....61.......... this is still not what I would have expected.
